Our clinical director Jenae recommends "What My Bones Know: A Memoir of Healing from Complex Trauma" by journalist Stephanie Foo. The book details her journey from child abuse to sobbing and having panic attacks at work as an award-winning radio producer. It offers a raw and deeply personal exploration of generational trauma, complex PTSD, and its lasting impact. Check it out here: https://ow.ly/cVSm50TEEO6

Bystander intervention could save someone from domestic or sexual abuse. The bystander effect is the phenomenon where someone is less likely to help when witnessing abuse because they assume others around them will intervene. If it is physically safe to do so, find the courage to challenge the status quo by implementing one of these four techniques.

While physical abuse can be one way abusers maintain power and control over their victims, it does not occur in every abusive relationship and is usually not the only form of abuse. Emotional, financial, or sexual abuse, isolation, coercion, destruction of property, verbal threats, and intimidation are all forms of DV that may go undetected by friends and family. If you or someone you know is in an abusive situation and needs help getting out, please give us a call at 208-986-HELP (4357). Remember, it takes an average of 7 attempts for someone to leave an abusive relationship for good. Even if you cannot leave yet, our staff is happy to chat about your options.

The CDC states that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience physical domestic violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. However, DV also includes emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual violence. Millions of individuals are affected every year, across all social, economic, and cultural boundaries. It affects your friends, your relatives, your coworkers, and other people you interact with every day. In October, all donations to our Expanding Hope campaign that honor or memorialize someone will be displayed on a purple ribbon in the windows of our centers. These ribbons serve as a visual reminder that no one fights alone, and help and healing are available. Donate today to honor or remember a survivor or advocate in the fight against domestic violence by adding their name to the form. Your contribution will directly support survivors on their path to healing. 💜👉 https://ow.ly/f4NO50TuPJs We’ve recently expanded to two locations, doubling our capacity to offer critical resources to those in abusive situations. However, we urgently need to raise an additional $59,120 to ensure every victim receives the care they deserve. Every dollar counts in providing legal aid, transportation to flee, crisis counseling, and more. Your support is vital. Join us.

Yesterday, we experienced a sweet full-circle moment. A former client, who works at T-Mobile's Meridian office a block away from our Meridian center, took what they were learning at Faces of Hope and put it into action. They wrote a letter to T-Mobile’s CEO, sparking a sweeping policy reform implemented across the company worldwide. Local #TMobile employees selected Faces of Hope as one of five organizations across the Mountain West to receive a Difference Maker Award. We’re incredibly grateful for T-Mobile’s continued partnership, as well as their commitment to listening, enacting change, and ensuring the safety of survivors of abuse both within and outside of their company.

Avoid "why" questions, which can sound accusatory and encourage victim blaming, even with the best intentions. Each traumatic experience is unique, and everyone is affected in different ways. Events in life are subjective, so saying something like "Why don't you just leave?" isn't helpful. Statements comparing trauma don't take away any pain or suffering; they can make someone feel bad for speaking up. Listen without judgment and ask the person how they would like you to help. They may just want you to listen.
