#ICYMI: In a recent Human Resources for Health retrospective review, RTI’s Carrie Ngongo and her co-authors assess outcomes between associate clinicians (non-physicians) and physicians attending cesarean births in Tanzania and Malawi. The paper provides compelling evidence that associate clinicians are at least as effective as physicians in providing safe cesareans when measured by risk of iatrogenic fistula, suggesting that associate clinicians could be more widely used to ensure safe delivery via cesarean. When local health care resources are tight, every safe and appropriate option is worth exploring, particularly when it comes to ensuring maternal and child health. Two-thirds of global maternal deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Cesarean section saves maternal and newborn lives, yet it comes with a risk of complications. This new retrospective review in Human Resources for Health, conducted by RTI’s Carrie Ngongo, assesses the difference in cesarean section outcomes between associate clinicians and physicians attending births in Tanzania and Malawi. The paper provides compelling evidence that associate clinicians are at least as effective as their physician counterparts in providing safe cesareans, measured by risk of iatrogenic fistula, and suggests that associate clinicians could be more widely used to ensure safe delivery via cesarean.
