It’s not always easy getting a child to visit the pediatrician, but at the pediatrics service of Sédhiou Hospital in Senegal, things have changed! 🦖 As part of the USAID Owod project, the hospital received a new pediatric consultation table featuring a giant dinosaur head, bringing smiles to the faces of the 300 children who visit every month. What was once a challenge has now become fun and enjoyable, helping children feel more comfortable during their consultations. 🏥 "Even though some kids may be a little scared at first, they love playing with the dinosaur’s head during their check-ups. It really helps them cooperate, making our jobs much easier,” says Dr. Abdoulaye Diop, Head of Pediatrics service of Sédhiou Hospital. Through the USAID Owod project, health facilities in regions like Tambacounda, Kédougou, Sédhiou, and Diourbel have been equipped with tools and training to improve care for children. Pediatricians have also received specialized training in neonatal emergency care at the African Center of Excellence for Maternal and Child Health at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar. Twenty-five years ago, disability rights activist James Charlton popularized the powerful phrase, 'Nothing about us without us,' embodying the conviction of people with disabilities that they know what is best for them. While strides have been made toward more inclusive research approaches, true representation in research still falls short. Our latest blog outlines three equity-based principles—representation, engagement, and leveraging assets—that are essential for centering people with disabilities in research decision-making. Let’s build a future where inclusion is not just a goal, but a standard. https://lnkd.in/eKTiCjfz Jay Feldman Robin Wisniewski, Ph.D., NCSP #DisabilityRights #InclusiveResearch #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs #EquityInAction #DDAM2024
