When Ethan Hsu was in high school his father developed diabetic retinopathy, a chronic eye condition that occurs when diabetes damages the retina's blood vessels. Through a clinical trial, Ethan's dad was able to receive treatments that drastically improved his vision. Ethan saw first-hand the dramatic impact that drug development can have on quality of life for sick patients, which inspired him to begin pursuing a career in medicine through pharmacology competitions while he was still in high school. Ethan was the first person in his family to graduate from college and received a Bachelor of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the The University of Texas at Austin. As an undergraduate he conducted research in the Welsh Lab at MD Anderson Cancer Center. To date, he has published eight papers focused on treatment advancements in Immunology and Oncology. This summer Ethan is serving as a Research and Development (R&D) Intern for Roivant Sciences' Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Control (CMC) team. This internship is offering him the opportunity to further his research experience while directly learning about drug development. "I've always wanted to have hands-on experience in the pharmaceutical industry and I think that the work of the R&D department in Roivant's CMC is captivating, because the nature of the work is so new. The work is constantly growing and changing. For instance, even within the first week of my internship I was already getting to dive in on researching new technologies that not many people have gotten to touch. It's a great place to grow." Increasing Global Access to Medicines Roivant Sciences and Roivant Social Ventures (RSV) have partnered to host the Access to Medicines Internship and Fellowship Program, providing real-world drug development experience to talented PharmD students. This summer Magdalene Mallory is serving as an RSV Global Access Fellow, where she is using her grant award to volunteer at Goodlife Access and Goodlife Pharmacy Africa in Rwanda, and is leading initiatives to: - Conduct community healthcare clinic days that are creating access to otherwise unavailable blood pressure and blood glucose screenings for hundreds of community members in Kigali. - Create patient materials for post-screening healthcare education that provide next steps for building better health. - Standardize screening techniques for providers to promote sterile practice, patient privacy, and continuity of care. - Assist in the opening of new pharmacies. - Create and present a proposal on the creation of non-communicable disease screening/consultation rooms, including, but not limited to scheduling, building, budget, staffing requirements, and educational marketing to community members. - Contribute to the designing and setting up of patient consultation rooms in new pharmacies. We sat down with Magdalene to learn more about what drives her work and how her fellowship in Rwanda will impact her career development. Magdalene grew up in a small town in Texas where she noticed early on that accessing healthcare created a difficult challenge within her community. From an early age she began volunteering at Center of Hope alongside her parents, where she witnessed firsthand the barriers individuals face accessing basic supplies and healthcare services. Magdalene shared, "From the very beginning I have made it my personal mission to help increase access and trust for underserved patients." This passion to build patient-centered access is deeply rooted in personal experience for Magdalene. Growing up she remembers watching her mother travel three to four hours to see physicians that she felt she could trust to provide proper care for herself and her family. Magdalene became hyper aware of and educated on the mistrust of our medical system that marginalized communities have developed over time. Magdalene's Global Access Fellowship has created the opportunity for her to put the critical skillsets she has developed through her PharmD program directly into action. "The work we are doing through RSV and Goodlife in Kigali (Rwanda) is merging my passion for treating underserved patients with my interests in both clinical and industry work. I'm so excited to already be witnessing just how impactful my work can be to the communities that I am dedicated to serving!" 2024 Access to Medicines Summer Internship Program Roivant Sciences, Roivant Social Ventures (RSV), and Elutia have partnered to provide hands-on internship opportunities in drug development for talented PharmD students. The intentions of this program are to expand access to medicines to underserved populations, and to further UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy's goal of providing future industry leaders with pharmaceutical experience during their PharmD tenure. Reflecting on her experience as Roivant's 2023 Diversity in Pharma Research and Development Intern, Hannah Summers shared, “This experience has been nothing short of transformative. I have had the chance to delve into the various components of a pharmaceutical quality system, such as the importance of regulatory history and inspections, supplier qualification, and review of controlled documents, while witnessing the development of life-changing drugs, and actively participating in various aspects of the drug development process. These hands-on experiences have fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation for the work and dedication it takes to develop innovative medications.” We congratulate the following talented students on their 2024 internships: - Derek Bassett, Corporate Strategy Intern with Elutia, a biotech company led by RSV Advisory Board member C. Randal Mills, Ph.D. Elutia focuses on a proprietary drug-eluting biomaterial platform that stands at the forefront of medical innovation. - Amanda Bowlin, Regulatory Strategy Intern with Roivant Sciences. - Mackenzie Greene, RSV Global Access Fellow, volunteering with Goodlife Access and Goodlife Pharmacy Africa in Rwanda, Africa. - Ethan Hsu, Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Control (CMC) Intern with Roivant Sciences' Research and Development (R&D) team. - Magdalene Mallory, RSV Global Access Fellow, volunteering with Goodlife Access and Goodlife Pharmacy Africa in Rwanda, Africa. During the Spring 2024 semester all interns completed RSV's "Making Medicines" course.
