New bio-based and sustainable Raw Materials enabling Circular Value Chains of High Performance Lightweight BioComposites
About us
New lightweight High-Performance Composite (HPC) materials and efficient sustainable processing technologies will have an enormous environmental and performance benefit in all sectors of application. However, current sustainable HPC application is limited to large sectors due to their limitations in terms of long processing times, high prices and low recyclability. To overcome these limitations, r-LightBioCom propose a paradigm shift in the way HPC are manufactured and recycled, unlocking sustainable-by-design production of lightweight HPC. Therefore, the project will enable new circular value chains towards r-LightBioCom results, contributing to environmental-related EU goals and reducing the HPC waste generation and the use of non-sustainable fossil resources. Funded by the European Union under Grant Agreement Project No 101091691. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union. The European Union cannot be held responsible for them. Exciting intermediate result on sustainable bio-based resins in EU-Project r-LightBioCom: Successful impregnation and fusion of cured bio-based vitrimer particles by Hochschule Kaiserslautern – University of Applied Sciences! 💡 🌱 The textile group at our project partner Hochschule Kaiserslautern has developed a vitrimer bio-composite using hybrid natural/basalt fibre non-woven reinforcement. The cured bio-based vitrimer particles have been successfully impregnated and fused and provide reprocessing and reshaping properties to the bio-composite. The bio-content of the composite is 73%. Vitrimers are densely cross-linked thermosets that can be (re)processed like thermoplastics but maintain the benefits of thermosets. It is a class of plastics that holds stable structure and dimensional stability but can also be easily moulded and recycled. Due to dynamic covalent bonds, they can be “reliquefied”, repaired, chemically welded, recycled and reused in addition to being reprocessible at elevated temperatures and pressure. Within r-LightBioCom, Hochschule Kaiserslautern is leading the development and processing of sustainable bio-based resins and non-woven hybrid structures for composites based on bast and basalt fibres. #rLightBioCom #BioBasedMaterials #HighPerformanceComposites #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #BioResins #Recycling
