Thanks to decades of work to halt pollution and restore the #Hudson, people want to get in and enjoy the river. Much of the Hudson is safe to swim in much of the time, but the estuary has only 4 public swimming areas along its 150-mile stretch (a huge contrast to the 224 beaches on Long Island Sound). Particularly as climate change makes the need to cool off more and more pressing, especially for disadvantaged communities, why aren’t there more places to swim in the Hudson? From sewage discharges to infrastructure failures to funding, join #Riverkeeper experts Director of Advocacy, Policy and Planning Dan Shapley and Science Director Shannon Roback in our new webinar as they delve into the current situation and what can be done to make the whole river swimmable all the time for everyone.

Last week, the Kingston YMCA Farm Project and Riverkeeper kicked off our Source to Estuary course with a visit to the City of Kingston's drinking water source, Mink Hollow Stream 🌊 The course teaches people about their drinking water, where it comes from, where it goes, and what happens to it along the way, while revealing the hidden connections that exist between ourselves and the natural world. Alongside longtime environmental educator and advocate Martha Cheo, we collected and analyzed a diverse range of macro-invertebrates in the stream, including stoneflies, which are indicators of good water quality 🦞 Having a drinking water source that is protected creates an abundance of life in our streams, and when our streams are healthier, so are we 🐟 The Source to Estuary course in Kingston will continue through August with students traveling downstream to learn about water systems in the city, sustainable farming, wastewater treatment, and more 🚰 #SourceToEstuary #WaterEducation #ProtectOurStreams #Riverkeeper

While performing routine fish monitoring, our Habitat Restoration team found a cute surprise: This large adult American eel in the Poesten Kill, a tributary of the Hudson River in Troy, NY 🌊 Incredibly, the eel was found upstream of two dams and a 300-foot waterfall! Dams typically block the movement of species like eels, impeding access to critical spawning habitat. But this one overcame the odds by scaling both dams — the fish equivalent of climbing Mount Everest 🐟🏔️ #HudsonRiver #HabitatRestoration #AmericanEel #Wildlife #FishMonitoring #NatureIsAmazing #Riverkeeper

Months after a train derailed in Valley Falls, spilling tiny plastic pellets in the Hoosic River, these microplastics — called nurdles — are still being found in and along the waterway. Nurdles can carry toxic chemicals and metals that can build up in fish and wildlife 🐟 The ongoing impact of this railroad derailment on the Hoosic, a large Hudson River tributary, shows that prevention is the only way to prevent impacts from hazardous spills. Riverkeeper is advocating for better protections, from local emergency response readiness to state and federal policy. Read more about the impact of nurdles and how to report them 👉 https://lnkd.in/eM-Gghqc #HoosicRiver #Microplastics #Nurdles #EnvironmentalProtection #WildlifeSafety #Riverkeeper
