Our See Me, Hear Me Advocacy Group discussed "Informed Decision-Making and Supported Decision-Making" at this month's community meeting and announced that there are two positions open on the See Me, Hear Me Advocacy Board. This group, originally formed by individuals supported by River Edge Behavioral Health, has grown significantly to include both individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and advocates from the community who empower individuals with IDD to speak up about their choices, rights, and responsibilities.

We are privileged to have been a part of the panel discussion and the initiative by Macon Mental Health Matters on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) at the Macon-Bibb County Consolidated Government Center. As mentioned at the event, this information can help educate our community on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the immense impact just one consistent, supportive adult can make in the lives of children and adults and can help connect individuals with therapy and community support options and solutions. Our sincere thanks to our Child & Adolescent Department Program Manager, Shameyrae D. Miller, for serving on the panel.

River Edge helped the children and adolescents we serve start their year off right with our basketball-themed Back-to-School Bash at our Emery Highway site in Macon! Children and families played games, created crafts, and received bookbags filled with school supplies. Thank you to our Child & Adolescent/APEX Department and all the volunteers who helped make this happen!

The old hotels near the corner of Ingleside Avenue and Riverside Drive in Macon are being torn down to make way for our new Adult Peer Support and Community Integration Center! The new Adult Peer Support and Community Integration Center will support those facing a mental health challenge or psychiatric disorder. The center will allow individuals to gain insight from one another. Peer Group support and a Peer Support Specialist will help individuals transition out of negative circumstances and into positive ones. To be constructed at 2016 Ingleside Avenue in Macon, the 35,000-square-foot center will serve as a safe place for those seeking help through weekly support groups by providing a welcoming environment for anyone age 18 and over seeking a sense of belonging. We invite all adults experiencing Behavioral Health (BH) issues, who struggle with significant challenges, past or present, to the center. This may include traumatic events, mental health concerns, and/or substance use. The center will also provide services specifically tailored to adults with Intellectual Development Disabilities (IDD). The center will enable individuals to gain a deeper level of independence through teaching and reinforcing daily living skills, encouraging community integration, and offering volunteer and vocational programs. We aim to achieve this by assisting individuals through offering ongoing education and teaching the skills necessary to attain self-determination. The center will include large group rooms, a common area, arts & crafts rooms, calming rooms, a teaching kitchen, and an inclusive gymnasium.
