In northern Burundi, 13-year-old Gaby attends the eighth grade at Don Bosco Ngozi High School. Driven by the vision to support its students' proper growth and development, in partnership with Rise Against Hunger, in-country partner Salesian Missions began distributing meals through its school feeding program up to three times a day. These meals have improved Gaby’s health and ability to focus more at school and provide him the energy to participate in the school choir and play basketball with classmates, he explains how much he loves the rice meals above all else. “In this school, I like three things [including] the meals, the farm and the music,” he said. We are saddened to hear that the disaster has impacted more than 770,000 people. As I reflect back on this past week and prepare for the next, I think about the absolute joy and privilege it’s been to be able to travel to Johannesburg, South Africa with Jason Haulbrook and support the Rise Against Hunger Africa team for Nelson Mandela Day. We started the week being able to see some of the Early Childhood Centers that would receive the meals we’d be a part of making later in the week. As a former educator, it was a special moment to connect my past with my present. We heard the stories of the principals who founded the schools with absolutely nothing and continue to build their schools literally brick by brick and fight for the children in their communities to get an education. The meals provided by Rise Against Hunger Africa can provide cost savings of up to R350 a month, per 20 children, allowing schools to be able to use those funds towards teacher training, classroom infrastructure, first aid, etc. The rest of our week was focused on packing 1 million meals across 3 days and 3 locations; Sandton Convention Centre, Mall of Africa, and City Properties. Nelson Mandela events in Joburg were next level. I’ve been to many events, packing across 15 states during my time so far at Rise Against Hunger and between Brian Nell and his staff, the additional support we had, and the volunteers, the energy is unmatched! Unbelievably long, hard days were had by all on the team, but everyone from Rise Against Hunger dug in and we hit our goal. The people here are so kind, so giving of themselves and of their time. It is clear to me that it is just a part of who they are here and it is expected of the corporations. To say I have a renewed sense of passion, drive, and urgency for the work I do is an understatement. It is evident that although we (across the world as an organization) have accomplished a lot, there is more each day to be done.

Working to end hunger together and doing good with Pfizer! ❤️ Earlier this week, Pfizer colleagues took action against food insecurity and recognized their 175th anniversary by hosting a meal packaging event in New York City. Part of Pfizer’s 175 Days of Good initiative in honor of their anniversary, the volunteers packaged more than ✨50,000 meals✨. Volunteers also heard about how Pfizer and Rise Against Hunger are working together to end global hunger with remarks from Edna Ogwangi, Rise Against Hunger’s Chief Programs Officer, as well as two of Pfizer’s key leaders, Sally Susman, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Executive Vice President, and Rady Johnson, Chief Compliance, Quality and Risk Officer, Executive Vice President. And this event is only the beginning! Throughout the year, Pfizer colleagues across the globe are hosting and joining several volunteer events to package 1 million meals in 2024, building on their 5 million meal totals since 2010.
