Today is July 1st, marking the first day of Disability Pride Month 2024! Disability Pride Month is held in July because the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law in July of 1990. As an organization, we have a very exciting month ahead of us, and we cannot wait to be able to tell you why!

Today marks 55 years since the Stonewall Riots, a landmark event in the history of the LGBTQ rights movement when patrons at the Stonewall Inn rose up and fought back against a police raid. Disability intersects with every other identity and lived experience, and the overlap between the disability and LGBTQ community is particularly significant.   “Today, we celebrate the queer disability community, the leaders of the past and present who fight for a better future, and we redouble our efforts to ensure that no one is denied access to all aspects of community life because of who they are or who they love,” said Ariel Simms, RespectAbility’s President and CEO. “We belong.” Find resources at our website: https://lnkd.in/ejzHsUv

Along with 90 other disability organizations, RespectAbility signed on to this letter from the AAPD to CNN asking them to ensure that tomorrow night’s Presidential debate is accessible for disabled viewers, and that candidates are asked about disability issues. It is critical that all voters, including disabled voters, can access the information they need to make an informed decision this November.
