✨ Understanding the IT Operating Model for Lower-Middle Market Companies In the realm of IT, the operating model is crucial. It involves finding the right balance of staff, external services, vendors, and products to ensure scalability and resilience while mitigating risks. This approach weaves security throughout all aspects of the model, rather than treating it as an isolated element. 🛡️ Security Integration: A Key to Cost-Efficiency For companies with revenues between $50 million to $250 million, integrating security early in the planning stages is essential. Addressing security after the fact often results in higher costs, whereas proactive planning can significantly reduce expenses. By focusing on policies and processes over technology, companies can create robust risk mitigation strategies without breaking the bank. 💡 Key Takeaway Prioritize security integration from the start to build a scalable, resilient IT operating model that is both cost-effective and secure. 🌟 Understanding Technical Debt in IT 🌟 In our latest podcast episode, we dive deep into the concept of technical debt. Often misunderstood and sometimes overused, technical debt is more than just a buzzword. Here's a quick breakdown: 🎯 What is Technical Debt? Technical debt arises when a decision in your IT function (be it code, infrastructure, or any part of your IT department) leads to a system delivering less value than expected. This shortfall necessitates future rework to align with the desired outcome. 🛠 Decision Making: It's not just about shortcuts or subpar efforts. It's about the intentional choices made, whether knowingly or unknowingly, that impact system value. 🔍 Technical Debt vs. Technical Constraints: Technical Debt: Something that can be "paid off" through rework or improvement. Technical Constraints: These are limitations (like compliance or regulatory requirements) that you must work within and cannot simply "pay off." Tune in to hear more about managing technical debt and distinguishing it from constraints in your IT projects! 🎙️ Listen to the full episode on your preferred podcast platform! In this clip, Kyle Gotzman breaks down technical debt and draws similarities to financial debt and how to two are treated and impact the ability for businesses to grow. Give the full episode a listen on your preferred podcast platform or on our YouTube channel! https://lnkd.in/gUWJSxij One of the best practices in managing technical debt is to allocate dedicated time, people, money, and resources to pay it down, much like financial debt. However, this approach can be challenging for the business side to grasp, as the immediate returns are not always visible. When IT departments spend weeks addressing technical debt, the tangible results might not be new features or an improved bottom line. Instead, the benefit is the reduction of the debt itself, enabling future growth and keeping the "interest payments" manageable. We've seen organizations where technical debt is so pervasive that their IT teams spend most of their time managing outdated systems. This prevents them from focusing on strategic, forward-looking initiatives. The cost of not addressing technical debt today is significantly higher than it was a decade ago. Forward-thinking IT departments are striving to balance the maintenance of current systems with strategic business goals, but they are often hindered by the resource drain caused by technical debt. Understanding and addressing technical debt is crucial for enabling IT teams to contribute to long-term business success. #beresourcive
