According to the latest findings from the 2024 ResMed Sleep Survey*, Japanese people have the shortest average sleep duration globally, at just 6 hours and 27 minutes. In particular, women in their 50s sleep even less. This month, we co-hosted a symposium at the 48th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Sleep Research at Pacifico Yokohama North. The event united leading sleep medicine experts to address the often-overlooked issue of sleep-related breathing disorders in women. Our symposium featured presentations from five renowned specialists who delved into the latest trends, mechanisms, and treatments, with a particular focus on the unique sleep challenges faced by women in Japan. We also had a compelling discussion with Dr. Azusa Ikegami, Director of Kuwamizu Hospital and a leading researcher on women's sleep issues, including during the perinatal and menopausal periods. Dr. Ikegami shared insights on the current state of these problems and what can be done to improve daily life. Read on to learn more about the symposium and the insights discussed. The surf is on at the events in Paris 🏄♂️🏄♂️🏄♂️ For athletes like Dani Garcia, a title-winning Spanish pro surfer, restful sleep is critical to achieving peak performance. His journey to better rest began when he was diagnosed with sleep apnea and started #CPAP therapy. “Having discovered this condition is amazing…How many championships I could have won out of those I lost if only I could have rested better.” Watch his story in this film produced by BBC StoryWorks as part of MedTech Europe’s #ConnectingTheDots series and check out more info here: https://lnkd.in/eJfQUmUc

As people travel to make it to the summer games, it can be tricky to adjust to new sleep environments. Can taking your pillow while traveling help you get to sleep? According to the 2024 Resmed Sleep Survey, *24% of respondents take their pillows while traveling. Its familiar texture, smell, and comfort trick your brain into thinking you are in a familiar place. When you're on vacation, unusual places can disrupt your circadian rhythm. Shared dorms, overnight train or bus rides, and uncomfortable beds can all make it harder for your brain to trigger the sleep process. Here are some tips to help you overcome these challenges. "For everyone, sleep is critically important — it's one of the three pillars of health: sleep, diet and exercise. You can imagine not just the average person, but an elite athlete, those three pillars of health, it's sort of what they live by... the way they work out and the way they recover, including sleep, it's critical for them." How will athletes adjust to new sleeping environments, and will this impact performance? ResMed Chief Medical Officer Carlos Nunez shared his insights with CBS News. https://lnkd.in/ewDd6Vxj

Did you know that good sleep can be the key to improved performance? 45% of people worldwide experience more energy for sports after a good night's rest.* Last week, 25 colleagues from our Munich office unleashed their sleep superpowers and participated in the #B2Run, a sports event for companies taking place in several cities across Germany. Our ResMed Runners set a strong example for team spirit and health – and of course they also had a lot of fun while together taking on a sporting challenge. With their cool shirts and running heroes, they also used the event to raise awareness about the importance of sleep health. Congrats to all ResMed runners, and good luck to all our colleagues in other German cities that will follow in their respective B2Runs over the next few weeks. *2024 ResMed Sleep Survey, ResMed online sleep survey of individuals across 17 countries. 👋 Meet William and learn why he joined ResMed's Apprenticeship Program. 🎤 Tell us about your experience as Apprentice at ResMed. I’m currently pursuing a 2-year Master’s degree focused on quality management, which I find both fascinating and important. I joined ResMed in November 2022, where my main responsibility involves setting up a quality management system. In my role, I work closely with different departments to ensure that we meet high-quality standards effectively. By improving our processes, we aim to ensure that the medical devices we produce are not only top-notch but also completely safe for patients. What drives me in this work is the knowledge that our efforts directly impact patient satisfaction and safety. It’s a fulfilling journey where every step brings us closer to making a real difference in people’s lives ✨ What makes ResMed special to you? Why did you join the Apprenticeship Program? When I first joined ResMed, I was pleasantly surprised by the welcoming atmosphere. Rather than treating me solely as an apprentice, managers embraced me as a valued team member from the get-go. This inclusive approach made it seamless for me to dive into my tasks and contribute meaningfully. One of the standout features here is the open communication culture. Whether it’s reaching out to any department or sharing ideas freely, there are no barriers hindering collaboration. https://lnkd.in/e4NJS4eN #ShapeTheFuture

"When you aren't sleeping well, your cortisol levels are higher, increasing your visceral fat. You tend to be more irritable; you may want to snack more and be less motivated to be active. Having an untreated sleep condition like OSA is going to be a major barrier to managing your weight in a healthy way." Weight management specialist Dr. Dafina Allen and her husband, sleep medicine specialist Dr. Christopher Allen, discuss the significant interplay between obesity and sleep health with SFGATE. https://lnkd.in/eBqPdAum
