About us
Named a World Changing Idea by Fast Company, Renewal Mill is an award-winning, next-generation ingredient company that fights global food loss by upcycling byproducts from food manufacturing into premium ingredients and plant-based products. We’re building a new circular economy of food that’s better for the people and the planet we love. Our flagship ingredient is organic okara, a high fiber, high protein, gluten-free flour made from the nutritious soybean pulp leftover when you make soy milk. But, okara is just the beginning. Food waste is the world's $1.2 trillion problem, and our process can be applied to an array of byproducts, from oat pulp to potato peels to grape pomace, almond meal, and more. Backed by some of the top culinary minds in the industry and winner of the Institute of Food Technologists' (IFT) Future Food Disruptor of the Year award, Renewal Mill aims to be the food industry's go-to supplier for upcycled ingredients that will define the future of sustainable food. Founded in 2016, we're proud to be a woman-owned business based in Oakland, CA.

Kicked off an amazing start to #climateweeknyc at the Streetlife Ventures demo night on Monday and Earthshot Ventures and Planeteer Capital’s Female Founders & Funders lunch on Tuesday. But the highlight so far was the Yale Planetary Solutions reception, which featured a fireside chat with Secretary John Kerry (Presidential Climate Envoy) and remarks from new Yale University President Maurie McInnis — who included a warm shout out to our very own ClimateHaven! 🙌🙌🙌 Best of all, the Yale goody bag, featuring products from numerous Yale Ventures climate tech startups: P2 Science, Inc., Cambium Carbon LLC, Banofi Leather, Renewal Mill and AIR COMPANY - which shared some of its premium vodka and perfume made from captured CO2. As a small team, packaging is an iterative team effort. If there's a detail you love, chances are Aaron E Brown made it happen!
Bravo on a great user experience, TCHO Chocolate! 🍫 I want to praise a brand that's truly delighted me. I keep thinking I should call them out and now I'm finally doing it. Their packaging rocks! Anyone else agree with me? It looks great, is easy to open AND easy to close, and they understand that I (and most people) don't—and shouldn't—eat an entire chocolate bar in one sitting. Inside the box are three small wrapped bars of chocolate instead of one. The graphics on the underside of the box are SUCH a delightful surprise, too. I also love the fun collabs they’re doing(Equator Coffees, Fieldwork Brewing Co., Third Culture). They’re not hiding the fact that they’re having fun thinking about how we, the customers, are going to interact with their product. I love seeing little details that show you're really thinking about how the end user might want to enjoy your product. One small thing we've done at Renewal Mill is put a ziplock seal on all our mix pouches. It makes sense for something like our 1-to-1 GF Flour mix, but for our cookie baking mixes? Well, we know that sometimes you’re the only one in your house who is gluten-free, and you want to make a little treat just for yourself. On our brownie mix, we (sort of) hid the recipe on the bottom gusset of the pouch to show you how to make a lil single mug brownie so you don't have to use the whole mix at once. We know our users can quarter or halve our mix instructions and save more for later. What other little details have you seen from CPG brands that make you go... "Oh, that's clever!"? (While I'm at it I have to add... The Hoppy Hour was so much fun to try with its clever effervescence 🫧, and their social media content is 🔥) #UserExperience #PackagingDesign #ThoughtfulDesign #CustomerExperience #CPGInnovation #Sustainability #FoodInnovation #ConsumerInsights #ProductDesign #SmallDetailsBigImpact #TCHOChocolate #RenewalMill #GlutenFreeLiving #BetterForYou #FoodPackaging #MugBrownie #SnackSmart

I’m just finishing a break to care for my new son. I’m thankful to work for a company that lets me take this time, pays me, and supports me in doing so! Paternity leave is both great and hard! I didn’t realize the new level of constant awareness it takes to fully watch over a child. It’s like suddenly having an app on your phone that drains way more battery than you’re used to. Now, I’m more aware of the finite amount of energy I have each day and the importance of knowing what needs to happen and what can wait. It’s a work in progress. On a personal level, I’m so grateful for this time. Since the day he was born, I’ve had plenty of time with him, but never the chance to spend all day with him by myself. Before, I logically understood his existence and was good at providing for and helping with his needs. But this time with him has been amazing for reflecting, observing, and connecting. The way he plays with my beard (and sometimes pulls!) while I bottle-feed him. The way he stares long and hard at a new toy or even just his hand. Now that I’ve had this time, it’s hard to imagine not having it. I’ve gotten to see and know his little, funny personality. I’m so lucky to have an amazing, happy, and healthy child to get to know, and a partner who is truly incredible at figuring out this whole raising-a-child thing with me. Thank you to Renewal Mill, our suppliers, and our customers for your patience. In a six-person startup, this time away can cause slower email responses and delays. #PaternityLeave #WorkLifeBalance #Fatherhood #ParentingJourney #FamilyTime #Grateful #StartupLife #EmployeeSupport #Thankful

Thank you to Nick Hawkins for recent coverage on Upcycled foods in Inc. Magazine. We appreciated your reach out and engaging conversation with Claire Schlemme! Beyond Renewal Mill's highlight among our peers Salt & Straw and The Spare Food Co. as "breaking ground in this innovative market", this article well articulated the varying challenges in the industry along with political progress made for Upcycled foods.

“The very nature of upcycling requires collaboration. A producer may not have the activation energy to use the co-product themselves, but collaboration with a buyer can make it happen” - Claire Schlemme This week Renewal Mill was represented on stage at IFT with John .M. Mwangi Ph.D, Job Ubbink, Sergiy Smetana, Ana María Quirós, and Ziynet Boz to discuss innovative solutions addressing food loss and value creation.
