Transit is the Answer.
About us
The Regional Transportation Authority (a.k.a. RTA) was created in 1974. In 1983, the amended Act created three "service boards" known as the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra commuter rail and Pace suburban bus. The RTA's primary responsibilities became financial and budget oversight of CTA, Metra and Pace, and regional transit planning issues. Guiding the RTA's oversight responsibility is a Board of Directors who approves an annual budget and two-year financial plan. The Board consists of 15 members and a chairman appointed from the six-county region. The RTA Board is also required annually to review and approve a five-year capital plan, which is a blueprint of the capital activities to be funded by the RTA and executed by the CTA, Metra, and Pace.

During the development of Transit is the Answer, we invited dozens of transit advocates to share their stories about our regional transit system. Like Dallas, our riders envision a future where all Chicago residents can have the means, the accessibility, and the capability to use public transportation to get them where they need to go safely and on time. Chicago Transit Authority recently completed the construction of a new maintenance facility on the South Side at 63rd St and Martin Luther King Dr. The RTA’s Project Management Oversight (PMO), Capital Programming, and Government Affairs teams went on field to see the new and improved non-revenue rail shop. This project was made possible thanks to funding from the Illinois Department of Transportation Rebuild Illinois State Bond Program. The new non-revenue shop replaces CTA’s previous maintenance facility that was over 100 years old. This shop will enhance maintenance efficiency and fleet management, leading to cost savings and increased service reliability. By centralizing maintenance, the shop will help with organization and improve safety standards for CTA's non-revenue vehicles.

RTA's Project Management Oversight and Capital Programming teams as well as RTA Board Director Gorman and Director Lewis attended a ribbon cutting ceremony for Pace Suburban Bus’s new South Campus facility in Markham, Illinois yesterday. Funded in part with Rebuild Illinois and RTA bond funds, this new facility will house Pace’s Safety and Training, Customer Relations, and Sign and Shelter Departments. This project represents millions of dollars in economic development in the South Suburbs and will make bus service more reliable and efficient, reduce operational costs, and support agency growth through the accommodation of more buses and improving maintenance facilities. The project will create jobs, boost the local economy, and incorporate eco-friendly practices, making public transit greener and more sustainable. https://lnkd.in/d_zEM823

RTA's newly released report, Building a More Equitable Fare Structure for Public Transit in the Chicago Region, recommends that the state legislature more adequately fund free and reduced fare transit programs to improve access to transit and, in doing so, shrink the system’s coming operating funding gap. On Thursday, July 11, RTA Chairman Kirk Dillard joined a panel during the Civic Federation's board meeting to discuss the future of public transit in the Chicago region. He was joined by Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning Executive Director Erin Aleman, Illinois State Representative Eva-Dina Delgado, and Illinois Senator Ram Villivalam, and the panel discussion was moderated by Cempel International Transportation Consulting President Erik Cempel, PE, PMP. The Chairman discussed potential governance reforms to improve service and reliability but emphasized that governance reform alone will not solve regional transit's fiscal cliff, and sustainable funding must come from the state to maintain and improve transit operations. #transportation #publictransit #paneldiscussion #chicago
