Updates

  • Chronic cough is a persistent and challenging condition, affecting 1 in 10 adults. A study led by Regenstrief 's Michael Weiner, M.D., MPH, found that 20% of chronic cough patients received a prescription for opioid-containing cough suppressants. The study also highlights disparities, with older patients and those on Medicaid more likely to be prescribed these drugs. With chronic cough being difficult to track and manage, this research underscores the need for safer, more effective treatment options. Regenstrief research scientist and biomedical informatician Paul Dexter, M.D., is a co-author on this paper. https://lnkd.in/gdesDyRA

  • A study from Regenstrief's Johanne Eliacin, PhD, reveals that many Black Americans are unaware of their heightened risk for Alzheimer's, highlighting the need for culturally sensitive strategies to support brain health. Researchers recommend investing in community well-being, proactive outreach and integrating Alzheimer's information into wellness campaigns. Increased representation in research is crucial for effective outreach. https://lnkd.in/giRSAt6p

What is the connection between dishwashers and healthcare? It starts with the story of Sam Regenstrief, an immigrant from Austria who settled in Indianapolis and was known as a visionary in industrial production techniques who made the dishwasher efficient and affordable. After a visit to a local hospital that was struggling to provide care, Sam realized the need for improvements in the way health care was delivered. With advice from experts Sam founded the Regenstrief Foundation which created the Regenstrief Institute. Today, under the leadership of Dr. Rachel Patzer the Regenstrief Institute conducts research that brings together research scientists from academia, clinical medicine, technology, and industry that helps translate research into practice to improve health care worldwide.  The institute's Center for Aging Research, the Indiana Addiction Data Commons, the Tracking Post-Covid 19 conditions, the Dental Health Informatics group, the Public Health Informatics group all work with research faculty at IU Indianapolis and the IUSM to improve health care and its delivery. I appreciated learning about the Regenstreif Institute and meeting with their faculty and staff who are highly engaged and are eager to do all we need to do to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequities. • Congratulations to Regenstrief's Dr. Kathleen Unroe and Dr. Jennifer Carnahan on their faculty promotions at IU School of Medicine. Your dedication and expertise continue to make a profound impact. Here's to your continued success and the incredible work ahead. Dr. Unroe has been promoted to professor. Her research, clinical and policy interests are focused on improving quality of care — particularly access to palliative and end-of-life care — for nursing home residents. Dr. Carnahan has been promoted to associate professor. Her research focuses on improving care for older adults in nursing homes, including transitions of care from a nursing facility setting to home for patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

  • Most young people have at least 1 romantic relationship by ages 14 to17, yet promoting healthy sexual behavior among teens remains a challenge. A new multi-site randomized-controlled study led by Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University Research Scientist Dr. Arthur Owora evaluates the impact of an innovative program called "About Us." Designed for youth facing sexual health disparities, this blended-learning program aims to improve sexual behavior, relationship communication and conflict resolution. https://lnkd.in/gywWzfMs
