Sustainably Mining Critical Metals with Biology
About us
Rare earth elements (REE) are critical for sustainable energy infrastructure, but their current environmental impact is simply too high. REEgen is reimagining the global rare earth supply by replacing the most harmful production steps with genetically optimized microbial processes, securing these critical elements for a future of unbounded, widespread renewable energy.

Last week, REEgen traveled to New York City for NY Climate Week! Our CEO Alexa Schmitz pitched to investors at Venture For ClimateTech’s showcase, wrapping up our participation in their fourth cohort, and demoed at Activate’s Hard Tech Showcase. Lots of great collisions came out of the trip, and we look forward to keeping in touch! #nyclimateweek #climateweek #startups #sustainableREE #criticalminerals

REEgen’s CTO Sean Medin made a trip down to Washington D.C. last week to speak at the ARPA-E Ammonia and Critical Minerals Recovery Workshop. He was invited to give a lightning talk on REEgen’s work and gained a better understanding of the landscape of rare earth element recovery from wastewater. We look forward to potential collaborations! #criticalminerals #biotech #rareearthelements

We’re thrilled to announce that REEgen is one of only five teams to win a Stage 3 Air Force Research Laboratory award in the Mid-Atlantic region! This award money will help accelerate our work in scaling up bacteria-based rare earth element (REE) purification. Thank you to the AFRL Mid-Atlantic Research Hub for their ongoing support! We look forward to continuing our collaboration. #climatetech #startups #AFRL

REEgen's CTO, Sean Medin will be at the #REIAAnnualConference in Tokyo, Japan this June. If you're there, you can catch him on the panel, "New process technologies for rare earth separation," to learn more about how REEgen and others are tackling this tough problem in the rare earth supply chain:
#REIA Weekly Newsletter https://lnkd.in/ei28u4xB We often hear the phrase “rare earths are not rare”, but we often forget that the #processing and #separation of #rareearths into individual high-purity #elements and #compounds is #technologically challenging. The traditional #solventextraction process has its pros and cons with potentially considerable #environmental impacts. Researchers and companies have been developing alternate #processing methods, with some in the process of #commercial-scale development. However, #techno #economic viability is still a question. Do they perform better environmentally and contribute to the development of a #green rare-earth value chain, with a reduced #carbon #footprint? If so, should #downstream industry and #OEMs pay a premium to make these #technologies commercially viable, at least in the initial phase of #commercialization? Want to learn more? Join us in #Tokyo for the 2024 #REIAAnnualConference, where esteemed panellists from REEtec, REEgen, RARE EARTH TECHNOLOGY LTD, BiotaTec - Next Gen BioMining Centre and Tussar Corp will delve into these issues. In this week's lead article, published in Nature, Qing Hua et al investigate a unique #nanotrap method for the efficient separation of rare earths, using a #metal-organic framework. Testing a proof of concept, various binary models in solution were evaluated; the resulting separation factors included SF (Pr/Dy) = 333 and SF (Nd/Er) = 273, demonstrating highly #efficient separation over a single step. The approach shows potential for efficient and selective #extraction and separation of rare earths from mine wastewater and other solutions, although the authors did not report on separation factors achieved during the separation of adjacent rare-earth elements on the periodic table, which is a much more challenging endeavour. Other stories include updates from REIA members Energy Fuels Inc, Aclara Resources and Appia Rare Earths & Uranium Corp. (CSE: API | OTCQX: APAAF), e-mobility and geo-political news. #sustainability #rareearth #mining #recycling #circulareconomy #climatechange Badrinath Veluri Gareth Hatch David O'Brock Gautam Khanna Sirli Sipp Kulli Dejene Kifle Alexa Schmitz Sean Medin Mark Chalmers Tom Drivas Ramon Barua Costa Barry Murphy Nabeel Mancheri Alexandra Cristina Donea

Continuing our #RareEarthElement series, next up is element number 63, Europium! Named after the European continent and discovered by Eugène-Antole Demarçay in 1896, Europium has many practical applications. Europium plays a vital role in producing vibrant red colors in both television screens and smartphones. Europium is also an excellent neutron absorber, which makes it a great material for control rods in nuclear reactors. #Europium #Electronics

Happy #EarthDay! Today, REEgen is focusing on little changes WE can make to maximize our #cleanenergy impact! First, be open to investing in #cleanenergy! Whether this be solar panels on the roof of your home or an electric car, investing in clean energy can help the planet stay green. Even the smallest changes, like turning off the lights when they are not in use, using LED lightbulbs, carpooling, and adding more plants to your diet can over time increase your savings and reduce your carbon footprint! Lastly, invest your time! Research and support policies that are fighting for the increased use of renewable energy and help to decrease our reliance on fossil fuels.
