About us
The Northern Ohio Region of the American Red Cross serves 31 counties and their more than 5.3 million residents by preventing, preparing for and responding to emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; and supports military members and their families. Daylight saving time ends overnight and the American Red Cross encourages everyone to test their smoke alarms as they turn their clocks back to make sure the devices are working. Over the past year, local Red Cross volunteers responded to help thousands of people affected by home fires, which account for most of the about 65,000 disasters that the Red Cross responds to annually across the country. When turning your clocks back this weekend, test your smoke alarms and replace the batteries if needed. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years or older. Components such as sensors can become less sensitive over time. Follow your alarm manufacturer’s instructions. Practice your two-minute home fire escape plan. Make sure everyone in your household can get out in less than two minutes — the amount of time you may have to escape a burning home before it’s too late. Include at least two ways to get out of every room and select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home, such as your neighbor’s home or landmark like a specific tree in your front yard, where everyone can meet. If you cannot afford to purchase smoke alarms or are physically unable to install one, the Red Cross may be able to help. Visit https://rdcrss.org/2OxZb50 to request a home fire safety visit. Since October 2014, the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, working with community partners, has saved at least 2,196 lives by educating families about fire safety, helping them create escape plans and installing free smoke alarms in high-risk areas across the country. Happy to partner with United Way of Ashland County for Day of Caring, as #RedCross volunteers installed about 60 free smoke alarms and shared home fire safety information with residents, making 20 homes and their inhabitants safer. If you need alarms, visit https://rdcrss.org/2OxZb50. And be sure to TEST your alarms when you TURN your clocks back this weekend. #StandardTime #TurnandTest #SmokeAlarms #Volunteers

October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, and before it ends, we want everyone to know about warning signs, risk factors and what to do in a cardiac emergency. We encourage everyone to enroll in a First Aid/CPR/AED course so they can learn how to help save a life when someone goes into cardiac arrest and minutes matter. Our Western Lake Erie chapter has partnered with BCSN and the Taylor Automotive Group to launch the ‘Heartbeats for High Schools,’ initiative to provide local high schools with tools, training, and information necessary to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies. Chapter director Rachel Hepner said, “My goal is to ensure all high school students learn compression only CPR at some point during their high school years.” Read more about how young people in local Red Cross Clubs are learning lifesaving skills in today's blog post. https://rdcrss.org/4e4lIfq #CardiacArrestAwarenessMonth #CPR #AED #RedCrossClubs
