Recology sees a world without waste.

About us

At Recology, you’ll join a team of passionate, creative, and dedicated individuals who are leaders in sustainability. As the only 100% employee-owned company in the waste and recycling industry, our employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) ensures that our company remains in the hands of our employee-owners, not external stakeholders. This means that every team member has a stake in our success and shares in the rewards of our collective efforts. Founded by immigrants in early 1900s San Francisco, Recology started with the vision of seeing value in what others discarded. Today, we continue this mission with over 3,700 employee-owners serving more than one million customers across California, Oregon, and Washington. Our services include residential and commercial waste collection and recycling, curbside composting, construction and demolition debris recycling, and more. Each service is designed to keep our communities clean and materials out of the landfills. Where some see waste, we see resources. Join us at Recology, where you’ll help customers divert waste from landfills, embrace sustainable practices, and contribute to a future without waste.

Recology is proud to be the first waste and recycling company to pilot a hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric refuse collection truck! Our partners, New Way® Trucks and Hyzon, have delivered cutting-edge technology that will bring our industry closer to achieving a zero-emission future. We’re so excited to test this vehicle on the streets of San Francisco as part of our pioneering efforts to reduce waste and use clean energy. “Recology’s leadership on recycling and composting helped make San Francisco ‘the greenest big city in the nation’” said Recology CEO Sal Coniglio. “Now we are leading the way on sustainable operations.” Read more at https://bit.ly/3T5Ymy6

In pursuit of a world without waste, Recology is committed to reducing our overall carbon footprint. Last year, our facilities made up less than 2% of our total greenhouse gas emissions. Our plan is to further decrease that number by powering our transfer stations, MRFs, customer service centers, maintenance shops, and all other facilities with 100% renewable or carbon-free electricity by 2028! To celebrate Zero Emissions Day, we’re sharing some of the steps we've taken to reduce our own emissions and help create a cleaner, more sustainable future! 🌍 By prioritizing renewable fuels, we’ve cut our fuel-use emissions by 77% since 2018. 🌍 Five years ago, we set out to power our fleet with 90% renewable or alternative fuels by 2022. We're proud to say we’ve achieved that goal—and we’re not stopping there! 🌍 In 2019, we rolled out the nation’s first electric Class 8 rear loader in Seattle and have been testing electric collection vehicles in more operations. 🌍 Finally, we just tested North America’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric refuse truck in San Francisco! We’re excited to keep revolutionizing our fleet to help us achieve a world without waste.

Our CEO Sal Coniglio was joined by New Way® Trucks and Hyzon executives to highlight our hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric refuse collection truck at the Department of Energy Event last week! We were honored to show off our first-of-its-kind refuse trucks along with the other exciting San Francisco/Oakland hydrogen projects to the U.S. Department of Energy Under Secretary for Infrastructure David Crane, Governor Gavin Newsom, and Senator Alex Padilla. Recology has long emphasized fleet sustainability and we’re excited to pilot another environmentally progressive initiative in San Francisco. In collaboration with New Way and Hyzon, we’re proud to keep leading the way toward a zero-emission future!

Gov. Gavin Newsom raises his hands to celebrate the historic investment in California's clean hydrogen future. 📍Hyzon is on-site and showing off in Oakland, Calif., sharing how our high-performance fuel cell systems decarbonize vehicles with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Under Secretary for Infrastructure David Crane, Gov. Gavin Newsom and Sen. Alex Padilla. Along with our partners New Way® Trucks and Recology, we’re proud to support today’s celebration of the $12.6B investment to create a Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub in California through ARCHES H2, the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems. #HydrogenFuel #FuelCell #ARCHES #ZeroEmissions #Hyzon #FuturePower #ANewWayForward

With the support from our customers and community partners in 2023, Recology kept 1.4 million tons of material out of landfills – equivalent to nearly 70,000 full garbage trucks! By recovering as much recyclable and compostable materials as we can, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ensure the re-use of materials into new products, and deliver nutrients back to the earth. We had an amazing time at our 2024 PNW Safety Road-eo and Company Picnic! This year’s event was held at the Portland Expo Center where Recology actually provides collection and processing services. Our employee-owners and families enjoyed a fun-filled day full of activities like dunking our general and operation managers at the dunk tank, participating in a raffle that featured local sponsorship prizes, and a friendly competition for truck drivers, forklift drivers, and mechanics. A special thank you to our Volunteer Committee, Safety Team, and Recology Ownership Culture Committee for hosting another fantastic event!
