July is #DisabilityPride Month and the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (#ADA). Disability is broader than most people assume—it can be visible, invisible, physical, mental, or psychological. According to the Center for Research on Disability, around 27% of American adults live with a disability and despite advancements in legislation, they still face many barriers. The #DisabilityJusticeMovement formed in 2005 to challenge ableism and advocate for the disability community, especially those existing at the intersection of multiple identities like race, gender, and sexuality. This Juneteenth, let’s stand against the erasure of Black history. 📚✊🏾 According to PEN America, more than 30 states have banned books by Black authors. These bans, along with the removal of Black history from classrooms, threaten to silence Black stories and legacies. As leaders of color, we hold the power to ensure our young people know and celebrate our history. That’s why our Chief Entrepreneur in Residence, Andrea Foggy-Paxton, and Chief Program Officer of The Social Studies Accelerator powered by EdLoC, Ebony McKiver, have curated a powerful reading list of banned books by Black authors. Dive into these important works and share this list with parents and young people you know.
