I had very interesting conversation with Howard Berger at Realcomm Events on Friday about their forthcoming Electrify event on September 23-24 in Forth Worth, TX (as part of my new role as executive officer of th Digital Buildings Council and thanks to intro by Timothy Miscovich at smartengine wtec): https://lnkd.in/esGwp_Dc I first started to hear about Smart DC-Powered Buildings and their role in the drive towards net zero when working for a (converged) network specialist back in 2022. That was very much focused around PoE, but I have since seen and heard of others presenting on DC buildings including design and consulting engineers that show an array of ways to deploy DC particularly with lighting, i.e. as more smart commercial fittings and bulbs are coming on the market that now even have their own trade shows. I would be particularly interested to hear the case studies being presented at Electrify by likes of Hotel Marcel, Mouser Electronics and Sinclair Hotel (see links to these projects that Howard shared with me below). As an aside, what would also be fascinating to understand for me would be the Smart DC-Powered Buildings adoption and costings roadmap for refurbishment and retrofit projects, i.e. where there’s existing plant and technologies with lifecycles and upgrades options to consider, including those linked to embodied carbon replacement calculations. That’s part of why I think there’s an interesting discussion to be had about regulation as a possible driver that joins the dots between Smart DC-Powered and Sustainable Buildings, e.g. New York Local Law 97 (LL97) or more performance-related ratings like NABERS from Australia that is being adopted as part of ESG commitments by organisations around the globe. But more locally it would be great to understand the maturity of the Smart DC-Powered Buildings market in UK and EU, including whether there are some interesting case studies including those for commercial buildings that have been accredited by smart building rating bodies.
