Unlocking our students' full potential through mentoring relationships based on a love of reading.

About us

Read Ahead’s reading-based mentoring develops in students the social-emotional skills essential for academic and life-long success. Since 1991, Read Ahead (formerly Everybody Wins! NY) has matched volunteer mentors from premier corporate and community partners with New York City students at nearby public elementary schools for one-on-one reading-based mentoring. Research shows that mentoring has a wealth of benefits to children—especially those from high-need backgrounds—but unfortunately those students who may benefit most are also least likely to have a mentor in their lives. Read Ahead’s unique model leverages corporate resources and talent, and capitalizes on the power of a shared reading experience between a child and a caring adult. Through the over 17,000 lunchtime sessions held annually, our students develop confidence in their abilities, motivation to learn, and the skills needed to thrive in school and beyond. During the 2018-19 school year, we are partnering with 15 elementary schools in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens to reach 1,000 students through our weekly reading-based mentoring program. In Read Ahead partner schools, nearly 70% of students are included in the New York City Department of Education’s (NYC DOE) “Poverty Count,” which means their families qualify for free or reduced price lunch and/or Human Resources Administration (HRA) benefits. We are proud of our strong track record of success, with 98% of the partner teachers in our most recent program year (2017-18) stating that they were likely or highly likely to recommend Read Ahead to a colleague.

In honor of National Literacy Month, we are proud to announce the continuation of our partnership with Read Ahead and their Virtual Mentor Program. We partner with Read Ahead to ignite a passion for learning in the next generation, cultivate strong readers, and foster a love for education. We take pride in supporting community initiatives that promote literacy and education and eagerly anticipate the positive transformations this program will bring.    “Read Ahead is a genuine opportunity to connect with a young student and help them on their academic journey. Dare I say it is a chance to truly have a positive impact on someone’s life. We are fortunate to partner with Read Ahead and look forward to many more years of reading!” shared Alexandro M. Padrés (he/him/his), a Paul Hastings partner who volunteers as a bilingual reading mentor. #TeamPHintheCommunity #NationalLiteracyMonth

Appreciate teachers every day! We've had a great time at our partner schools the past few weeks putting on Teacher Appreciation Breakfast and Lunches. It's been a great opportunity to gift fun Read Ahead swag, share the program's impact on students, and discuss best practices and insights in preparation for the next school year. We are grateful for the strong partnership we have with teachers and school staff across Read Ahead schools and all they do for our students. Pictured here are Read Ahead Staff members Anna, Jose, Shay, and Jamilia at P.S. 111 and P.S. 67.

Our partnership with the Read Ahead mentorship program began over a decade ago, in which Morgan Lewis volunteers have read with children to aid Read Ahead’s mission of promoting literacy among children in underserved communities. In recognition of this partnership, our network of more than 60 global volunteers was recently celebrated at the Read Ahead 2024 Gala. “This growth reflects not only our commitment to empowering change through children’s literacy, but also our firm’s profound dedication to community engagement—a central tenet of our firm’s culture,” remarked partner Patricia Brennan while accepting the Corporate Honoree award on behalf of the firm. “As mentors, we not only impart knowledge but also draw inspiration from our mentees’ boundless creativity and curiosity, often receiving far more than we give.” Together, we will continue to grow our mentorship relationships with the smallest among us, empowering young minds through literacy.
