About us

The mission of Raising Expectations is to educate, engage and empower youth in challenging circumstances by providing them with opportunities to build strong academic skills, leadership skills and self-esteem. Raising Expectations sets high standards of excellence by raising the academic, social and civic expectations of each child, while exposing them to the world of opportunity beyond their neighborhoods and encouraging children to become critical thinkers. Since 1995, Raising Expectations has provided impactful youth development programming for over 1500 youth in 8 of the most distressed inner city neighborhoods in the city of Atlanta. The organization specifically targets neighborhoods that are marginalized, under resourced and lack the support systems and positive role models. Raising Expectations creates a stable alternative of strategic support, encouragement through mentorship and broadened life experiences that prepare them to overcome the odds stacked against them. It is unique among out-of-school time (OST) programs in that it is longitudinal in its relationship with students. Students begin their relationship with Raising Expectations when they are in elementary school and continue as they matriculate through secondary and postsecondary schooling.

  • A Heartfelt Thank You to Mayor Dickens and Our Amazing Volunteers! We want to extend our deepest gratitude to Mayor Andre Dickens for welcoming our students and volunteers and for conducting a mock interview at our YouthWORK Mock Interview and Capstone Competition. Your presence and participation made a significant impact on everyone involved. RE is proud to be a part of the group project to make Atlanta the best city to live in for all of our neighbors. The passion and dedication of our students and volunteers created an incredible morning of impact and connection. Seeing our future leaders engage with such enthusiasm and witnessing the guidance and support from our volunteers was truly inspiring.  Our students overcame their nervousness to showcase their personal development, as well as group work focused on various aspects of the Digital Divide through the Comcast Digital Navigator YouthWork program. Together, we are shaping the future workforce and providing invaluable opportunities for growth and development. Thank you to everyone who made this event a success! We can’t wait to share more about this exciting morning. #YouthWORK #FutureLeaders #CommunityImpact #CareerDevelopment #Inspiration #MayorDickens #SYEP #DigitalNavigators

We were honored to receive an invitation from Atlanta’s award-winning journalist, Rose Scott to participate in “Coffee Conversations” featuring our co-founder, Tangee Allen, along with a distinguished panel of experts. The discussion focused on Atlanta's continuous growth and evolution as a 21st-century city. Key topics included economic mobility, jobs, housing, and how these factors shape our quality of life. The big question: who is truly benefiting from Atlanta’s thriving change? Natives or newcomers? Panelists: Tangee Allen, Co-founder of Raising Expectations, Wanona Satcher, CEO and Founder of Mākhers Studio , Courtney English, Chief Policy Officer for the City of Atlanta Highlights: 🌟 Atlanta's Unique Identity 🌟 As we celebrated 100 years of educational excellence within the Washington Cluster, we also recognized Atlanta as a hub of Black intelligence and achievement. There's so much pride in being part of a community that houses the largest concentration of African American minds internationally. 🌍 Community Building 🌍 At Raising Expectations, we believe that community is where housing, education, food, and health intersect. We build lifelong relationships with the families we serve, ensuring they have the pathways to new opportunities and can thrive within their communities. 📚 Empowering the Next Generation 📚 Our Real Estate Investment Program (REEP), based in Stockbridge with an office in Atlanta, aims to educate our youth about careers in commercial real estate. By providing them with the necessary vocabulary and exposure, we ensure their voices are heard and valued in this industry. We work with intentionality to support students who may not have been at the top of their class but had the potential to excel. 🤝 Collaborative Efforts 🤝 We strive to address both the social and emotional needs of our students, including them in essential conversations. Through leadership and community partnerships, we work to create pathways for our youth to succeed and contribute to the spaces we co-create. Thank you for joining us for this insightful conversation about the future of Atlanta and the role each of us plays in shaping it. Let’s continue building a brighter future together! 🌟✨ https://lnkd.in/evn62URb

  • We are thrilled to spotlight our incredible Boys, Books & Brotherhood (BBB) and Lit Chics (LC)! The BBB initiative began during the 2017-18 school year through the United Way of Greater Atlanta’s Build-A-Library Program. Using funds from this grant, we created an onsite literary nook featuring works that reflect the vast range of African American experience. 📖✨ Today, the program has expanded to include a literacy club led by RE staff and supported by dedicated adult male volunteers affiliated with the ETA Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity who inspire our students to enhance their reading and writing skills. This initiative not only promotes literacy but also fosters a love for reading and self-expression among our students. This year, both groups of students and volunteer mentors are reading, discussing, and learning about the trajectory of the civil rights and other social justice movements. Following their monthly readings, they meet to further delve into the materials, deepening their understanding of past events and their effects on current situations. We deeply appreciate the support of the United Way of Greater Atlanta's African American Partnership for these literary. Join us in celebrating the joy of reading and the transformative power of literature! 📖❤️ #LiteracyMatters #BBBInitiative #RaisingExpectations #UnitedWay #BuildALibrary #AfricanAmericanLiterature #ReadingIsPower #LitChics #SocialJustice

  • In recognition of National Mental Health Month, we are proud to highlight Juju, who is much more than a pet—she is a vital resource at Raising Expectations. Juju significantly contributes to addressing our students' social, emotional, and academic needs. Research consistently shows that animals like Juju provide substantial mental health benefits, such as reducing stress, anxiety, and loneliness while fostering companionship and emotional well-being. Juju's presence offers comfort and unconditional support, helping to create a positive and nurturing environment where our students can thrive. Her calming influence promotes a more relaxed and focused atmosphere, which is essential for learning and personal development.
