Good news from the remote Usala Forest in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo! In July, Rainforest Trust partner @gracegorillas and their team traversed thick, unforgiving terrain and hundreds of rivers and streams in one of the most remote rainforests on Earth. The goal of this particular 14-day round trip was to bring modern technology to a traditional community that is devoted to protecting Critically Endangered Grauer’s Gorillas while sustaining their own livelihoods in the forest. Read the full story by following the link - https://lnkd.in/gq25JEEF #Conservation #Wildlife #Nature #GrauersGorilla 📷Grauers Gorilla or Eastern Lowland Gorilla with baby by Martin Pelanek

🌍🌿 It’s International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, a day to celebrate the guardians of our planet's biodiversity. Indigenous communities worldwide have lived with respect for and in harmony with nature for centuries. Their knowledge, practices and deep understanding of their lands ensure the sustainable use of resources, carbon sequestration and food security. Indigenous Peoples account for just over 6% of the global population, but steward a third of our planet’s most important areas for biodiversity. Research shows that 42% of land managed by local communities and Indigenous Peoples is in good ecological condition. 🌱💚 Rainforest Trust recognises their intricate wisdom and has made a long-term commitment to support Indigenous Peoples and traditional communities and to secure legal land tenure and management rights of their territories. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #GuardiansOfNature #ProtectIndigenousLands

Rainforest Trust recently worked with partner WWF–Laos to safeguard the 120,632-acre Xe Sap National Protected Area, providing habitat for the elusive Saola (known as the “Asian Unicorn”) and other species at risk of extinction. Not only was this 2% more protected acreage than the original goal, but during the course of the project, the Laos’ Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry proposed upgrading the entire area to a National Park. The park is now nearly 500,000 acres in size, giving critically endangered species like the Large-antlered Muntjac and Red-shanked Douc Langur a chance at survival. This project is part of Rainforest Trust’s strategy to protect the Annamite Mountains, a lush, biodiverse treasure spanning the Laos-Vietnam border in Southeast Asia that shelters some of the world’s most spectacular, threatened wildlife. #ConservationSuccess #Wildlife #Laos #SoutheastAsia 📷 Waterfall in Xe Sap by Thomas Calame Saola by David Hulse Red-shanked Douc Langur by Nattanan726

Rainforest and shrubby savannah stretching along Guinea’s border with Sierra Leone are home to many threatened species such as Critically Endangered African Forest Elephant, Western Chimpanzee and Endangered Giant Ground Pangolin. Illegal logging, bushmeat hunting, slash-and-burn agriculture and the construction of a 100-mile iron ore railway threaten the survival of species already facing extinction and desperately hanging onto survival. Rainforest Trust and local partner, The Wild Chimpanzee Foundation, seek funds to create the 560,512-acre Pinselli-Soyah-Sabouyah National Park, which will connect to neighbouring Outamba-Kilimi National Parks (182,364 acres) to create a vast wildlife corridor for wide-roaming species like the elephant. If you would like to support this vital project and help save the Critically Endangered African Forest Elephant, follow the link below – donations are doubled for a limited time! 🐘🌳 https://lnkd.in/dTyS4j9g #Conservation #SaveTheElephants #RainforestConservation #Fundraising #WestAfrica 📷 African Forest Elephant by Ondrej Prosicky Baby West African Chimpanzee by Photosbypatrik Giant Ground Pangolin by simoneemanphotos

Happy World Rainforest Day 🌳🌳 Every day, an area of rainforest the size of Bristol is lost. The Peruvian Amazon is a globally vital rainforest home to hundreds of Indigenous communities who rely on the land for their survival. Its destruction releases vast amounts of carbon, driving climate change. Unprotected land is targeted as it has no clear ownership or legal authority looking out for them. These communities are threatened by illegal mining, drug and land trafficking, logging and monoculture plantations, including coca plantations for the drug trade. Rainforest Trust is working with partner Confederación de Nacionalidades Amazónicas del Perú and supported by the International Land Coalition to secure land tenure rights on half a million acres of Indigenous territories in some of the last remaining tracts of Amazon rainforest in Peru. The project will support at least 30 Indigenous communities who urgently want to conserve their lands. On World Rainforest Day, donate to help Indigenous communities secure the rights to irreplaceable rainforest that they have lived on for generations and your donations are doubled: https://bit.ly/3Rwkr8p 📸: Amazon Rainforest, Peru by YOJHAN - Ucayali project site and local community residents  by  CONAP #WorldRainforestDay2024 #WorldRainforestDay #IndigenousPeoples #Conservation #Amazon #Rainforest

This #WorldEnvironmentDay, Rainforest Trust is proud to announce a massive milestone—50 million acres of habitat protected to date, an area 40 times the size of Grand Canyon National Park. For over 36 years, Rainforest Trust has worked to safeguard critical habitat, establishing protected areas in partnership with Indigenous and local organizations and engaged communities across more than 62 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. Protecting the environment is critical to all life on Earth, and one of the leading drivers of environmental destruction is deforestation. Tropical forests store carbon and actively remove it from the air, and 50% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity is found in these habitats. The protection of standing forests is critical. Today, for #WorldEnvironmentDay Rainforest Trust UK is joining the world in raising awareness for action against climate change and resilience against the desertification of rainforest land. Healthy rainforests means a thriving Earth and preserving them is the most cost-effective defence we have against the loss of biodiversity and the current climate crisis. The destruction of the Amazon rainforest, for example, if left unchecked, would interrupt the recycling of rainwater and cause a positive feedback loop between less forest and less rain. The Amazon is nearing the tipping point where much of the remaining forest will degrade to savannah woodland, altering the climate across South America and beyond. Donate today, for World Environment Day, to help prevent deforestation and the disruption of our water sources and weather systems via the link: https://bit.ly/4aIhPLs 📸: Deforestation by Richard Whitcombe - Climate Crisis Photo - Deforestation Brazil by PARALAXIS -  Amazon Rainforest Fire #WorldEnvironmentDay2024 #Amazon #Rainforest #ClimateAction
