An international non-profit organization working to create a better future for people and nature
About us
The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization working in more than 60 countries at the intersection of business, agriculture, and forests. We are building an alliance to create a better future for people and nature by making responsible business the new normal. By bringing diverse allies together we are making deep-rooted change on some of our most pressing social and environmental issues. Together, we amplify the voices of farmers and forest communities, improve livelihoods, protect biodiversity, and help people mitigate and adapt to climate change in bold and effective ways. Join our alliance. Our alliance is all about changing the way the world produces, sources and consumes. Every company has the power to help build a better future by sourcing commodities responsibly and adapting its business model to become more sustainable. By joining us, you are helping meet the increase in demand for responsibly made products. And when the demand is there, farmers and foresters work hard to meet it, helping drive real, meaningful impact. Everyone wins when we bring the right people together. The Rainforest Alliance has recently merged with UTZ, a Netherlands-based program and label for sustainable farming worldwide. What's yellow, delicious, and helps fuel the economies of several tropical countries? If you guessed banana, you're correct! 🍌 However, there is a sour side to this sweet fruit: The industry has a long, ugly history of deforestation, worker abuse, water pollution, and reckless pesticide use. After forming in 1987 to fight forest destruction, the Rainforest Alliance set its sights on improving the banana sector, starting in Costa Rica—one of the world’s top banana exporters. From safeguarding biodiversity to supporting workers’ rights and well-being, we're proud of the progress we’ve made in Costa Rica’s banana sector. But, we also recognize that more needs to be done to make the banana industry truly sustainable. Peel back the layers of our impactful work with banana farms in Costa Rica in our article below!👇 #RainforestAlliance #Sustainability #BananaSector #Bananas #CostaRica #RainforestAllianceCertified #Certification

In Ghana’s Sui River region—one of West Africa’s most important cocoa-growing areas—we're working with communities to support regenerative agriculture, forest restoration, and thriving local economies! 👉 https://bit.ly/3Ln8zSP Representatives from 106 farming communities joined forces with government officials, cocoa traders, chocolate manufacturers, and the Rainforest Alliance to develop a landscape action plan for 382,000 hectares. Through the plan, farmers are: 🧑🌾 Learning to apply regenerative and climate-smart practices, including planting shade trees, composting, and conserving water 💼 Getting support setting up additional businesses, such as vegetable and snail farming, bee keeping, and honey production to boost their incomes 🌱 Planting tree seedlings on cocoa farms, along riverbanks, and in formerly degraded areas 🌳 Gaining ownership of trees through a simplified tree registration process By focusing on the big picture and local action, our work in Sui River showcases the power of #IntegratedLandscapeManagement with rural communities leading the way. Our job is to harness the power of our alliance and facilitate the efforts of local people as they transform their landscapes for the benefit of all! 🌍 📸 Photo credit: Nu Image Communications #RainforestAlliance #Ghana #SuiRiver #Restoration #Sustainability #RegenerativeAgriculture #ForestRestoration #LocalEconomies #ClimateAction #Cocoa

The Rainforest Alliance is encouraged by the recent ruling of the High Court of Kenya at Kericho to ban any swearing in of John Chebochok at the Special Annual General Meeting of the Tegat/Toror tea factory. Mr. Chebochok has faced serious allegations that he abused a position of power to repeatedly exploit and sexually harass female tea workers. He was to be sworn into a director position of the tea factory managed under Kenya Tea Development Agency Ltd. (KTDA) on 18 July 2024. We have communicated our deep concern regarding John Chebochok’s candidacy throughout the election process and believe the court’s decision is a positive step in acknowledging the voices of women tea workers. In addition to this we are working with KTDA, local Civil Society Organizations, and other key stakeholders in the tea sector to create civic awareness among smallholder farmers and the local community, focusing on the importance of upholding good and ethical governance for the economic prosperity of the Kenyan tea sector. The Rainforest Alliance stands with the thousands of women working in the Kenya tea sector and remains committed to doing our part to help stop gender-based violence in agricultural supply chains. Our mission is steadfast to foster a tea sector where dignity, safety, and equality prevail for all workers and smallholder farmers. #RainforestAlliance #KenyaTea #TeaSector #HumanRights #WorkerRights #GenderEquality #Agriculture

💡 Should companies start their #DueDiligence efforts from scratch, or can they leverage existing processes to streamline it?👇 South Pole brought together experts—including the Rainforest Alliance's Cocoa Lead, Kerry Scanlon Daroci, and Key Account Manager of Coffee Trade, Kevin Lardner, and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)'s Head of Government Affairs, Cameron Plese—to explore this question and the role certification systems can play to support compliance with due diligence legislation such as #EUDR. In this report, our experts highlighted: 🌱 The overlap between our robust certification system and EUDR requirements, plus four additional criteria needed for alignment 🔍 The use of third-party auditors in our certification system ⚖️ How our system addresses the legality provisions of EUDR 📊 The importance of data and traceability in due diligence for high-deforestation-risk commodities ➡️ Swipe to dive into this Q&A and explore how certifications like those from the Rainforest Alliance help companies meet due diligence regulations! Many thanks to Shelby Smith, Christopher N. H. Schwarz, and the South Pole team for their collaboration on this extensive Q&A. 🤝 #RainforestAlliance #SouthPole #EUDRCompliance #DeforestationFree #Certification #Sustainability #SupplyChainTransparency #ResponsibleSourcing

In Veracruz and Chiapas, Mexico, migrant labor makes up a substantial part of the coffee workforce. These workers often face poor conditions and discrimination, with women migrant workers particularly vulnerable to violence and harassment. 🤝 With the support of the ISEAL Innovations Fund and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, the Rainforest Alliance has partnered with Quizrr—a leading EdTech provider of human and labor rights training—to address these issues. Together, we're rolling out innovative training modules for workers and managers on Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in these regions, tackling critical human rights risks in line with the OECD-FAO Guidance for Responsible Agricultural Supply Chains. Discover how here! 👉 https://bit.ly/4cBqlO6 🔍Training and direct engagement with rights holders are a must for global companies, especially in high-risk sectors and regions. New regulations mandate Human Rights Due Diligence (#HRDD), requiring companies to integrate training and engagement with rights holders into their due diligence processes. For instance, the European Parliament's June 2023 amendments to the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive emphasize meaningful stakeholder engagement and training. This project aims to pioneer bottom-up approaches to HRDD in agriculture by building the capacity of key stakeholders and rights holders on certified Rainforest Alliance farms. 💪 #RainforestAlliance #HHRR #Agriculture #Workers #DueDiligence #Chiapas #Asam #Coffee #Tea #Farmers
