An international non-profit organization working to create a better future for people and nature

About us

The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization working in more than 60 countries at the intersection of business, agriculture, and forests. We are building an alliance to create a better future for people and nature by making responsible business the new normal. By bringing diverse allies together we are making deep-rooted change on some of our most pressing social and environmental issues. Together, we amplify the voices of farmers and forest communities, improve livelihoods, protect biodiversity, and help people mitigate and adapt to climate change in bold and effective ways. Join our alliance. Our alliance is all about changing the way the world produces, sources and consumes. Every company has the power to help build a better future by sourcing commodities responsibly and adapting its business model to become more sustainable. By joining us, you are helping meet the increase in demand for responsibly made products. And when the demand is there, farmers and foresters work hard to meet it, helping drive real, meaningful impact. Everyone wins when we bring the right people together. The Rainforest Alliance has recently merged with UTZ, a Netherlands-based program and label for sustainable farming worldwide. We all have that little voice saying, “one person alone can’t possibly make a difference." But the fact is, there are millions of us ready to tackle the challenges we face with hope and optimism. If you’re with us—and if you’re all in, too—together we can create a better future. Pessimism is Out. We're All In. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗜𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗨.𝗦. 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 Santiago Gowland, 𝗖𝗘𝗢 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀, 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 On November 11th, 2024, the United Nations will commence the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, a critical moment in the global effort to address climate change. As the world gathers to confront this escalating crisis, the United States stands at a crossroads. 2024 is set to be the hottest year on record, and it marks the first time global temperatures have exceeded the limits outlined in the Paris Agreement. Yet, as we look ahead to 2025, the U.S. is facing the harsh reality of a new administration with a clear agenda to undo climate progress both at home and abroad. This shift poses a significant threat to the international climate framework, further jeopardizing efforts to avert the worst impacts of global warming. The Trump administration has repeatedly and publicly stated that if re-elected, the United States would withdraw from the Paris Agreement. The Rainforest Alliance strongly believes this would be catastrophic, as it would undermine global efforts to combat climate change, delay necessary actions, and reduce the political and economic momentum needed to limit warming. A U.S. withdrawal would not only jeopardize domestic environmental protections but also weaken international cooperation, potentially leading to slower progress in achieving global climate goals. To date, 195 states plus the European Union have signed the agreement. As a mission-driven organization, the Rainforest Alliance is committed to the protection of forests and other natural resources, improving the lives of farmers and forest communities around the world, and furthering human rights in global supply chains.  The outcome of the U.S. presidential election does not alter our mission or the impactful work we are doing in the 60 countries where we operate. We believe all governments play a pivotal role in implementing policies and actions that protect natural resources on both regional and national levels.  With the climate crisis at a tipping point, the urgency for action is greater than ever. In 2025, we must scale up our collective efforts, turning ambition into tangible action. We call on world leaders to make bold commitments—through policies, investments, and international cooperation—that protect biodiversity, mitigate climate change, and ensure a sustainable future for people and nature alike.  #RainforestAlliance #ClimateAction #ClimateLeadership #COP29 #ParisAgreement #USPresidentialElection2024

📢 New partnership alert! We're teaming up with Acorn to strengthen climate resilience and improve livelihoods for Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee farmers in Vietnam. ☕ This project brings together two Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee businesses—Vinhhiep Company Limited and Tin Thanh Dat Joint Stock Company—to support 1,500 farmers. Together, we’re advancing regenerative coffee farming practices to enhance climate resilience, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration on these farms—all while increasing farmers' incomes through access to the carbon market. 🌱 With each step, we're working to maximize long-term benefits for farmers by fostering resilient ecosystems, supporting sustainable harvests, and creating economic incentives. 🌏 Together with Acorn, we hope to bring this program to the Rainforest Alliance’s network of 60,000 farmers in the country over the next few years. This week, we're honored to join over 100 landscape leaders across Kenya at the Kenya Landscapes Actors Platform (KenLAP) Platform (KenLap) 2024 Conference as a key partner in showcasing Kenya's landscape restoration initiatives, policies, and strategies! 🌱 The conference theme, "Collaborative Innovation and Knowledge Sharing to Restore and Sustain Kenya's Landscape," set the stage for an inspiring exchange of ideas and solutions. Representing the Rainforest Alliance and drawing experiences from our landscape and certification work are: 🗣️ Marion Nduta, Rainforest Alliance Kenya & Tanzania Country Director 🗣️ Diida Karayu Wario, Team Manager of the Mount Kenya Sustainable Landscape and Livelihoods Program 🗣️ The Mount Kenya Sustainable Landscape Management Board 💡 A key takeaway from our discussions is the need for policies that support farming and forest communities to implement locally-led, nature-based solutions. By placing people and nature at the center of climate action, we can reduce emissions and sequester carbon while delivering meaningful benefits to communities. Many thanks to the partners who have made this collaborative effort possible, including The Rockefeller Foundation, WWF, 1000 Landscapes For 1 Billion People, WRI Africa, EcoAgriculture Partners, Kijabe Environment Volunteers (KENVO), CGIAR, CIFOR-ICRAF, and World Agroforestry. Reflecting on our journey at #COP16, we're honored to have led impactful conversations focused on halting deforestation, combatting land degradation, and protecting biodiversity through locally led, nature-based solutions. 🌱 At the heart of our discussions was a commitment to driving impactful conservation investments, which requires robust financial analysis and supporting local organizations in developing strong investment proposals. By adopting a #LandscapeApproach—uniting communities with public, private, and financial sectors to manage ecosystems sustainably—we can overcome financing barriers and enable stakeholders to co-create projects that benefit both nature and communities. 🧑🌾 As we look ahead to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (#COP29), one message is clear: climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation are interconnected crises that cannot be tackled in isolation. Many of the same government, civil society, and corporate leaders who attended COP16 will join us at the upcoming conferences, offering a unique and critical opportunity for a coordinated approach and more cooperation between the three COPs and their secretariats. These issues are part of a much larger, more complex puzzle. And if we hope to solve it, we need to work together, break down silos, and approach these problems in an integrated way. 2024 must be a moment for collaboration—are you with us? 🤝 Click on the link below to dive into our call for coordination—written by Duncan Williamson, Rainforest Alliance Senior Manager, Public Affairs & Advocacy! 👇 https://lnkd.in/gvQhdZSr #RainforestAlliance #Biodiversity #Climate #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #NatureBasedSolutions #Sustainability #SustainableFinance

As we reflect on the second day of the Economist Sustainability Week Africa in Cape Town earlier this month, it was a powerful reminder that creating a sustainable future requires collaboration, innovation, and urgency. Here's what stood out to us: 🚀𝗔 𝗩𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗔: Former astronaut and NASA International Space Station Commander Terry Virts reminded us: “We only have planet A, no planet B, so let’s roll up our sleeves and take care of our planet.” His message set the stage for key discussions on #RegenerativeAgriculture, intersectionality, and impactful partnerships. 🌱 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Fresh Del Monte’s Managing Director, Wayne Cook, shared how shifting to regenerative practices on their pineapple farms—like composting plant waste instead of burning it—has resulted in healthier soil, better water retention, richer microorganisms, and a two-month faster harvest. 🤝 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀: South Africa’s leading retailers emphasized the crucial role of NGOs, like the Rainforest Alliance, whose independent research and insights are essential in driving meaningful sustainability progress. 🌍 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Rainforest Alliance Senior Director for East and Southern Africa, Julius Ng'ang'a Ng’ang’a, highlighted the need to support smallholder farmers in meeting new #EUDR requirements. The future of sustainable agriculture must be inclusive—if farmers are left behind, so is progress. From space to soil, one message is clear: sustainability requires all hands on deck. Together, through partnerships and collective action, we can create nature-positive solutions, restore ecosystems, and support livelihoods. Now is the time to act—there is no planet B. ✊ #RainforestAlliance #SustainabilityWeekAfrica #Sustainability #ClimateSolutions #Smallholders #ClimateAction #NoPlanetB

How can we bring together different actors to finance initiatives at the landscape level that preserve biodiversity at scale? 🌱 We explored this crucial question yesterday at the "Unlocking Finance for Biodiversity Conservation" event, led by the Rainforest Alliance and CDP at #COP26 in Cali, Colombia. With support from USAID and mediated by our Chief of Party, Vanessa Coronado Mena, the event featured a panel with experts from Suzano, the Department of Caquetá, and Global Canopy to discuss how landscape approaches support the achievement of biodiversity targets and the flow of investments. Key takeaways from experts include: 💸 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: To lower the risks of investing in biodiversity, we need well-structured, blended finance mechanisms—and investors who are willing to think creatively. 🌾 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀: Progress on biodiversity requires solutions that reflect community needs and perspectives. Including local communities in project co-design ensures these initiatives are relevant, sustainable, and impactful. ✅ 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀: A landscape approach with defined goals and strong investment tracking fosters transparency and builds trust among all partners. 📸 Check out some captured moments from the event below! 👇 #RainforestAlliance #Biodiversity #Colombia #Landscapes #LandscapeManagement #SustainableFinance #ConservationFinance #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateAction #CommunityEngagement
