Ronjon Nag and I recently taught an AI Crash Course as part of Stanford Continuing Studies at Stanford University. Nearly 300 students from around the world joined for a 5 part series on all things LLMs, AI, and longevity science. My biggest takeaway from the students was that the need for explainability, as it relates to AI, is huge. My recommendation - take courses like this if you are looking to understand AI systems. The latest issue of The Economist is dedicated to anti-aging medicine. Based on amazing mitochondrial research in the past decade, we believe that Mitochondrial DNA decline is one of the biggest variables in the aging equation. Mitochondria aren't just a "hallmark" of aging. Chronic bioenergetic depletion, caused by mitochondrial decline, is the "foundation" of aging. Remember, we may not always be aware of the foundation of a building...the walls and the columns and the roofline may be more exciting to look at...but without the right foundation, the building will collapse. Without enough mitochondrial energy, cells can dispose of waste, can't replicate fast enough to heal damage, can't fight off infection, can't perform quality control needed to prevent DNA damage. The body has a hundred tricks and compromises it has developed, to maintain energy delivery to critical systems and keep itself alive over the decades. But skin, hair, muscle, and other tissues eventually degenerate. All this leads to what we call "age". We maintain that Mitochondrial therapy is a mandatory prerequisite to any aging therapy or regenerative medicine. Without massive infusions of new energy, the process of regeneration can't even get started. Mitochondrial DNA are the only way we know to create new energy at the needed scales. That's why we are focused on the creation of the mitochondrial bioreactor. (Note that nuclear DNA integrity is equally important to aging, and nuclear DNA also controls mitochondrial function, so epigenetic reprogramming is "another" primary driver of aging that has gained well-deserved attention.) We're proud to announce 2 new papers showing, for the first time, how mitochondrial transplants can reverse immune senescence, to combat infection, pandemic disease, and potentially some forms of cancer. This is an entirely new type of immunotherapy. First time anywhere! We used Mitlets - mitochondria encased in extracellular vesicles, emitted by platelets - to replace dysfunctional aged mitochondria in the white blood cells. Alternatively one might use mitochondria grown in an external bioreactor. With younger mitochondria, the immune system became younger, able to mount a significantly stronger defense to bacterial or viral infections. Although not yet tested in humans, some day this might help senior citizens avoid dangerous hospital stays due to influenza, sepsis, pneumonia, battlefield infections, etc., as well as children with primary mitochondrial diseases.
