Why is Texas's power grid so vulnerable? 😰 This week left Texans reeling from the catastrophic combination of extreme heat and Hurricane Beryl's aftermath. Millions of residents lost power, and many remain without. And there are reasons why Texas experiences more and longer blackouts than almost any other state. A fascinating podcast explores the volatility and isolation of Texas's power grid – and a novel approach to distributing energy storage within it. The recent episode of the Volts podcast, which aired July 3 (eerie timing, huh?), features co-founders of the Texas startup Base Power. They explain how their solution can improve grid reliability, efficiency, and the integration of renewable energy sources. Key points: ✅ Decentralized Storage: The new approach advocates for decentralized energy storage, allowing energy to be stored closer to where it is needed. ✅ Grid Efficiency: By distributing storage, grid efficiency is improved, reducing the need for large-scale infrastructure investments. ✅ Renewable Integration: Enhanced storage distribution facilitates better integration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind, which are variable in nature. ✅ Technological Innovation: The method leverages advanced technologies to optimize storage and distribution, ensuring energy is available when and where it is needed. 🌍 U.S. Gas Utility Spending: A Growing Concern for Homeowners The U.S. electric grid is advancing towards a renewable energy future – but many gas utilities are trying to hinder the transition. A new article sheds light on the cost and safety risks posed by ongoing investments in gas, such as rate increases and safety risks. Some key insights: ✔️ Aging Infrastructure: The vast spider web of gas pipelines and distribution networks is ageing, leaking methane, and becoming costlier to maintain. ✔️ Rising Costs: Utility investments in gas infrastructure may drive up customer rates. ✔️ Increased Risk: Greater investments in gas utilities could result in stranded assets as the world shifts to renewable energy. This sums it up nicely: "The efforts by the utility industry to replace aging pipes, while also attempting to add new customers, risks leading to massive overspending on gas infrastructure at a time when the country is also attempting to shift away from fossil fuels." It's clear that we need to move away from gas to power and heat our homes. At QuitCarbon, we're dedicated to helping homeowners make this transition seamlessly and affordably. Let's be proactive together! 🌎💚 Read more here: https://hubs.ly/Q02yjw6L0 #QuitCarbon #CleanEnergyUpgrades

💡💰 It's been a few days since the California Public Utilities Commission's decision to introduce a flat monthly "Flat Rate" charge of $24.15 for residential customers...but even before the announcement, the decision was clearly divisive. 👍 On the positive side, environmental groups like the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Sierra Club view this as a step in the right direction to make electricity more affordable for low-income households and encourage electrification of homes and vehicles, which is crucial for meeting California's climate goals. 👎 Others aren't convinced. The solar industry, represented by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), has criticized the fixed charge, calling it a "tax" that could hinder rooftop solar and storage adoption. Some don't think the changes don't go far enough. The Sierra Club, for example, wants regulators to eliminate the fixed charge for low-income households, exempt all-electric customers, and institute higher income tiers for wealthier customers. What are your thoughts? 🤔 We'd love to hear. https://hubs.ly/Q02xD5kS0
