✅ That’s a wrap on the Chicago leg of the UK #quantum delegation! 🏙️ It’s been a jam-packed 3 days. Here are some highlights: Day 1: 🔸 we kicked off meeting with Harley Johnson and Brian DeMarco who shared about the exciting opportunities at the new Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park 🔸 attended the world class Chicago Quantum Summit hosted by Chicago Quantum Exchange 🔸 Consul General Richard Hyde hosted a reception for the Chicago quantum and #tech ecosystem Day 2: 🔸 our friends at Ellis Porter - The Immigration Attorneys and HSA Global hosted a session on US expansion 🔸 we engaged top Chicago-based corporates for a conversation around use cases of quantum, with thanks to World Business Chicago and 1871 for hosting 🔸 met with quantum leaders from Fermilab to discuss opportunities with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Day 3: 🔸met with qBraid at their downtown office to learn about their quantum software platform 🔸explored CQE’s extensive programming across academia, research & industry 🔸 discussed regional, state, and federal efforts to support this new industry with Intersect Illinois & P33 Chicago 🔸 visited our friends at Infleqtion for lunch at the Chicago Board of Trade building Thank you so much to all of our partners and friends for making this such a successful few days in the #quantumprairie. It was great to host the UK Quantum Delegation at our offices in Chicago! We had very productive discussions and we look forward to collaborating with many quantum companies in the UK.

JB Pritzker: "[When it comes to quantum,] we're in the first inning in my view. Someday people will say, look at the overnight success that's occurred in quantum--but [it will have been] a '20 year overnight success.' And all of you are at the very front end. We want to be in the front end: Illinois, Chicago, University of Chicago, University of Illinois, and all the partners regionally and across the world." The Chicago Quantum Summit had a run of amazing speakers this morning: JB Pritzker, who talked about the strength of the #MidwestQuantum ecosystem; Noel Goddard of Qunnect, who talked about the company's product development ethos "Hardware Not Hype"; Joseph Altepeter of DARPA, who presented the goals of the Quantum Benchmarking Initiative; and Pete Shadbolt, who outlined PsiQuantum's achievements and plans for the upcoming Illinois Quantum & Microelectronics Park. Time to meet performer qBraid. The team consists of PI: Kanav Setia, co-Pi (Laura Gagliardi, (University of Chicago), Troy Van Voorhis (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Yuri Alexeev (NVIDIA), Raymond Samuel (NCAT), Yuan Liu, NCState and Matthew Otten (UWisconsin), Shengtao  Wang and Nate Gemelke(QuEra Computing Inc.) qBraid's Quanta-Bind project aims to unravel the mystery of Amyloid Beta protein's role in Alzheimer's disease. This intrinsically disordered protein forms plaques in the brains of patients, but its exact interaction with transition metal ions remains unclear. Traditional computational methods have struggled to provide conclusive results due to scaling issues. Quanta-Bind addresses this by combining fragmentation methods with quantum computing, using generalized superfast encoding to map fermionic Hamiltonians to qubit Hamiltonians. In Phase 1, the team successfully developed a software pipeline that processes protein geometry and generates quantum circuits using various fragmentation techniques. This pipeline has been validated on small-scale systems and optimized for current quantum hardware. For Phase 2, qBraid plans to run and refine noisy quantum circuits for diverse systems, paving the way for Phase 3 of the Q4Bio program. I'm excited to announce that qBraid has been selected for Phase 2 of the Q4Bio program by Wellcome Leap. The Q4Bio - Quantum for Bio program is focused on advancing human health with quantum computing. The key question it aims to answer is: What can near-term quantum computers do for human health? The qBraid team, along with collaborators from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory, North Carolina State University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and NVIDIA, has been working on a quantum software pipeline to study protein and metal interactions. Specifically, we've been investigating the amyloid-beta proteins involved in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. Our scientists have developed a quantum software pipeline that starts with an optimized protein geometry, uses multiple fragmentation techniques, and then studies the interaction of these fragments with metal ions. Simulating such interactions is challenging due to strong correlation effects, making quantum computers an ideal tool for this task. The fragmentation techniques in our pipeline are designed to run on quantum computers and leverage newly developed fermionic encoding with inherent error correction properties. Our initial testing has yielded very promising results, hinting at the potential utility of quantum computers for these types of simulation problems on near-term quantum hardware. We're grateful to the WellcomeLeap organization for funding this initiative and bringing this amazing team together.
