Neighborhoods shape us in fundamental ways. Purpose Built CEO Carol Naughton shares how her childhood summers were filled with, “joyful memories and a belief that neighborhoods can be places of possibility and adventure.” “I’ve come to recognize as an adult that those summers gave me and my peers something else: a foundation for long-term physical, emotional, and social health. It was a privilege for me and my peers to have summers like those. Many children in neighborhoods where Purpose Built Network Members are at work will not have the same chance – mostly due to structural factors like not being able to walk around a neighborhood safely and decades of disinvestment in public amenities like pools.” She shares how we can reverse these inequities by ensuring that everyone, regardless of ZIP code, can have a healthy and choice-filled life. David R. Williams recently shared on a Ted Talk how racism has a direct effect on the health of black Americans. Williams shared key points including: ➡️ Racism harmfully impacts the health of black Americans beyond their economic and educational status ➡️ Those discriminated against have been linked to having a higher risk of hypertension, obesity, breast cancer, heart disease, and premature death ➡️Black teenagers have been shown to have higher levels of stress hormones, blood pressure, and weight gain after high levels of discrimination. Williams shines a light on the discrimination in medical care, institutional racism and segregation, cultural stereotypes, and more in his discussion. He also mentions Purpose Built Communities and other initiatives across the United States that aim to help the effects of racism and improve the health of black Americans. Join us in welcoming a new team member! 📣 We are thrilled to announce Andrew Smith will be joining our team as the Vice President of Education Initiatives. Drew started his career as an elementary school teacher in Washington, DC Public Schools before moving into administration as an instructional coach, assistant principal, and eventually principal. Recognizing the need to reimagine the school experience, as principal, Drew and his team at Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School joined the initial DC Public Schools Design Lab, centering movement and physical activity for students and staff. He further expanded the school design and increased student opportunity, and his school joined the first Whole Child Collaborative in partnership with Transcend Education. As the Whole Child Model spread further, Drew joined the Transcend team as a school design partner and later moved into a project lead role, supporting 21 schools across Washington, DC implementing the model. After seeing the positive shift in the day-to-day experience for students and adults, when well-being and equitable opportunity are centered, Drew is motivated to support similar community-driven educational innovation across the country.
