West Virginia is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains and is largely rural with few densely populated communities. As a result, many community members struggle to access healthcare, social and educational services—resulting in stark health disparities that negatively impact the health, vitality and economic potential of individuals and broader communities. Learn how PHI’s Build Healthy Places Network is helping to improve the health of West Virginians and strengthening the state’s healthcare delivery system by supporting the Wild, Wonderful and Healthy West Virginia initiative—engaging participants, developing tools and resources and fostering connections with new sectors to advance racial equity, deepen investments and align resources that advance place-based health. https://lnkd.in/gMA4s-Cj

For decades, the chemical industry knew about the dangers of PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals" which have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption and other serious health problems. Now, PFAS are being found in farmland across the U.S. that used sludge from sewage and wastewater treatment plants as fertilizer:

The infant mortality rate in the United States rose by 3% in 2022, according to new CDC data. The report also found that infants of Black women had the highest mortality rate at 10.90 per 1,000 live births in 2022 followed by infants of American Indian/Alaska Native women and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander women. "This has been a rather intractable problem in the United States…and the disparities between white and non-Hispanic, Black infant mortality and white and American Indian/Alaska Native infant mortality are quite striking and continue to be very, very troubling," said Dr. James Greenberg, co-director of the Perinatal Institute at Cincinnati Children's and co-founder of Cradle Cincinnati.

In 2023, PHI’s California Alliance of Academics and Communities for Public Health Equity launched its Community Action Fund (CAF), a grant program supporting community-based organizations in building their capacity to partner with public health departments and university schools, and programs of public health to catalyze equity-driven policy change. In CAF's first year, over $130,000 was granted to seven local organizations who, collectively, are estimated to reach over 1 million Californians. Selected projects cover a variety of regions throughout California and have a strong focus on historically excluded or marginalized communities and authentic community engagement. In the latest episode of Roots of Change's Flipping the Table podcast, PHI's Michael Dimock speaks with Lisa Hamilton, a great chronicler of uncommon agrarians, and the author of the new book, The Hungry Season. With only 2.2 million, agrarians - those who live from working in agriculture - make up less than 1% of the US population. These few feed our nation and much of the world, and an even smaller percentage of those few farm or ranch outside the mainstream, the conventional commodity system. Welcome CivicSpark - AmeriCorps Program! We're excited to have you at PHI! “We were drawn to CivicSpark’s innovation and efficacy in addressing two urgent public health concerns: climate change and workforce development,” said PHI President and CEO Melissa Stafford Jones. “CivicSpark Fellows serve as public health amplifiers, bridging between public health systems and communities to create more engaged and more sustainable solutions. Their model of fostering on-the-ground leaders is closely aligned with PHI’s mission and commitment to equity, and we are excited to support CivicSpark, their Fellows, and their community partners in this next phase of growth.”
CivicSpark is embarking on an exciting new chapter! After ten years as a program of CivicWell, CivicSpark will be moving to the Public Health Institute before the launch of the 2024-25 service year. As one of the largest independent public health organizations in the country, the Public Health Institute serves as home to more than sixty programs working across the field of public health. Its robust portfolio includes work on climate change, leadership development, fellowship opportunities and the public health workforce, as well as one of the largest AmeriCorps VISTA programs on the west coast. Bill Sadler, Executive Director of CivicSpark, sees this as a natural next step in the program’s growth: “CivicSpark has been an incredibly impactful program in its first decade. The program has served as a capacity builder for hundreds of government agencies and nonprofits, and a workforce development pipeline for the sustainability field...As we enter the next decade of CivicSpark, this work is more important than ever as we experience greater climate emergencies with more amplified and disproportionate health impacts. I look forward to working with PHI leadership and all of our key stakeholders in leading this next phase.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gKYP5pEB
