Thank you to our industry partners and engineers who are key contributors to the development of power systems expertise around the world. Great to see members of our APAC team deeply engaged in collaborative discussions supporting the future of energy markets at CIGRE Australia!
CIGRE is about enabling sustainable electricity for all through the development of power system expertise globally. Was great last week to participate in stimulating discussions at the CIGRE Australia C5 panel meeting on electricity markets and regulation hosted by the Energy Market Company Singapore and PSC Consulting. This included a very interesting visit to the EDP Renewables APAC Pulau Ubin microgrid and learning about how it operates with vanadium flow batteries to power Pulau Ubin island with renewable energy.

Read about how the PSC team are supporting our clients in #ElectromagneticTransientStudies from our specialist Akbar Barkesseh
Methodology for Modelling High Voltage Cables for EMT Studies Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) studies are time domain-based analyses widely used in insulation coordination and switching studies. For an accurate assessment, a frequency-dependent or wideband model of cables is required in many switching studies. In such cases, merely using R, X, and C values of cables is insufficient; instead, the cable geometry needs to be created in software programs with EMT capability (such as EMTP-RV, PSCAD, DigSilent, ATP, etc.). The challenge in modelling high voltage cables by implementing the cable construction elements lies in the difficulty of obtaining electrical information such as the relative permittivity (εr) of all materials. The following presentation describes a method for adequately modelling high voltage cables based on finding the equivalent relative permittivity between the cable conductor and the Screen Wire Conductor (SWC). The validation procedure is demonstrated to ensure that the capacitance of the cable model aligns with the cable capacitance provided by the manufacturer. PSC has a strong in-house capability for performing (or training clients in) various EMT studies, including but not limited to: Insulation Coordination Studies: Lightning overvoltages (from back flash, shielding failure) or lightning overvoltages on the ungrounded end of the cable screen Line/transformer/filter energisation overvoltages Transformer energisation voltage dip assessment (for power quality compliance verification) and proposing mitigations such as sizing pre-insertion resistors (PIRs) or Point on Wave (PoW) switching Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV) assessment of circuit breakers for terminal faults/short line faults
