Providing nutritious meals to the sick and vulnerable in our Bay Area community.
About us
Project Open Hand’s mission is to improve health outcomes and quality of life by providing nutritious meals to the sick and vulnerable, caring for and educating our community. Every day, we prepare 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging. We serve San Francisco and Oakland, engaging more than 125 volunteers. Every day, thousands of people in the Bay Area are battling serious, life-threatening illnesses. And every day, Project Open Hand is there for them – providing healthy, nourishing meals with love. Accessing healthy food is critical for people who are too sick or frail to shop and cook for themselves. We also provide hot, nutritious meals for seniors to help them tackle the health challenges of old age. Good nutrition enables our clients to better manage the symptoms of disease, mitigate the side effects of treatment, and can speed recovery. Our registered dietitian supports and counsels our clients to help them feel better by eating right. In addition to providing life-sustaining food to our clients, Project Open Hand nourishes our entire community by engaging thousands of volunteers and donors, as well as dozens of local companies, in the important work of feeding neighbors in need.

The Gilead Sciences team volunteered at our San Francisco location last Friday for one of their Days of Service! We are so incredibly grateful for our continued partnership with their team. Thank you for helping us to provide more meals with love! #mealswithlove #mealsthatheal
One of the things I truly cherish about being part of Gilead Sciences is our commitment to giving back through initiatives like the Month-of-Service. During the month of June, Gilead Employee Resource Groups welcomed all employees to volunteer in partnership with company grantees across the Bay Area. This morning, I had the privilege to join forces with many colleagues from our Gilead Asian Interest network (GAIN) employee resource group to volunteer at Project Open Hand. This incredible organization is dedicated to enhancing health outcomes and quality of life by providing nutritious meals to those in need, while also nurturing and educating our community. The experience was incredibly rewarding, and inspiring. It reinforced how purpose, generosity, and hands-on volunteering are so integral to the Gilead culture. Grateful to be part of a company that not only values innovation and excellence in everything we do, but also prioritizes making a positive difference in the communities where we live and work! Thanks to Brianna A Berteaux, leaders at GAIN (Stephen Chien, Anand Chokkalingam, Suki Toguchi, Zia Mirza) and many others that made this opportunity possible.

Graham remembers Project Open Hand from the early days. But it wasn’t until years later that he’d find our organization again, this time as a client. Graham came to San Francisco in the mid-1980s, after being kicked out of his home at age sixteen for being gay. Read more of Graham's story in MealTimes 132: https://lnkd.in/g7WAhHfh
