We bring community-powered public spaces to life through CSR placemaking partnerships, education, and events.
About us
Founded in 1975, Project for Public Spaces has brought some of the most successful public spaces in the world to life. Public spaces are only able to fulfill their potential when the people who use them everyday take part in the process. That’s why we put constructive community participation at the heart of our work. We partner with corporate social responsibility initiatives and foundations to support projects of all scales and budgets—from planning or improving parks, plazas, and public markets to transforming entire districts. Through workshops, trainings, and conferences, we educate and equip people with the tools to lead in their own placemaking efforts worldwide. Our interdisciplinary team has worked on the ground with over 3,500 communities in 52 countries, creating places that serve as the foundation for our society’s health, resilience, and so much more. Together, we can build a world where every public space is community-powered. Learn more at www.pps.org.

Co-Executive Director of Project for Public Spaces | Transforming community-led public spaces | Strengthening public markets to maximize impact | Developing public space leaders | Former farmers market manager
In April 2022, after more than 20 years in the nonprofit sector, I embarked on a new chapter. I stepped into a leadership role at Project for Public Spaces, which wasn’t entirely unexpected. After all, I had been with the organization since 2006, and I was eager to apply the lessons I’d gained from the Coro New York Leadership Center to my own workplace. However, this transition was unique because I didn’t do it alone. Instead of preparing for the often-cited "loneliness at the top," I embraced a co-leadership model alongside my colleague, Nathan Storring. While we were excited about this new approach, it hasn’t always been easy. There have been few examples of successful co-leadership models to guide us, but I still believe it was the right choice, both for me personally and for the organization. As shared leadership gains more attention, I’m thrilled that we’re being recognized for taking an early—and, dare I say, bold—step in this direction. This morning, I’ll join a panel on co-leadership and its implications for the nonprofit sector at Stanford Social Innovation Review's 2024 Nonprofit Management Institute, “What’s Next for the Social Sector? Strategies and Tactics for Today’s Agile Leaders.” We’re certainly not the first to adopt this model, and we have much to learn, but we’re eager to share our experiences and hopefully inspire other organizations to explore co-leadership as a viable path forward. #SSIRInstitute

I’m so grateful to have participated in two inspiring placemaking gatherings in two great North American cities over the past week! Thanks to The Kresge Foundation for hosting Our Urban Future, a gathering of leading voices in community development, climate action, arts and culture, and placemaking, including brilliant longtime collaborator Tracy Hadden Loh. It also gave me the opportunity to finally experience some of Project for Public Spaces’s most impactful long-term projects firsthand, including Detroit’s Campus Martius Park. Next up, I made my way to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to speak about creating an infrastructure of care in public space at the Art of City Building conference, thanks to Isaiah Olateru, Thomas (TJ) Maguire, and the rest of their intrepid organizing team. It was a joy to get to know the people and places of this charming midsize city—especially the waterfront! I’m coming back to New Jersey feeling recharged to do the work, thanks to so many new ideas, new experiences, and new friends. #AoCB2024 #OurUrbanFuture #publicspace #placemaking #inspiration

"The lack of common spaces and common experiences means that isolation can become self-perpetuating." The New York Times opinion columnist, David French, describes a nation in which millions of Americans feel lonely and alienated. He goes on to say that "there are few higher and better callings than to forge a bond with a person and provide a place where they belong." Let's recognize the immense opportunity of investing in our shared civic commons as places of joy, for human connection and where everyone can feel a sense of belonging. #loneliness #connection #civicinfrastructure #publicspace #joy #belonging https://lnkd.in/dt9iBA2a
