Join our webinar 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞? In our recent posts, we talked about the Bin2Bean and bioSOILUTIONS projects. Now, we’re ready to bring everything together with a webinar that discusses how these projects, along with FENIX Project EU, are transforming biowaste into valuable resources like soil improvers, animal feed, and energy. We'll discuss practical applications and the latest advancements in biowaste management. Tuesday October 22 ♦ 12:00 – 1:00 PM GMT 2 ♦ Online 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞: https://lnkd.in/dzjfNEuR
About us
FENIX, a project aiming to develop soil improvement products derived from bio-waste. To obtain them, bio-waste is treated using renewable gas production technologies, resulting in two by-products. Through this process: 1) Green waste is valorized through pyrolysis, producing biochar and 2) Supermarket organic bio-waste is processed via Anaerobic Digestion, obtaining Digestate The mixture of biochar and digestate is a formulation rich in nutrients that can be used as a soil amender to increase its quality and water retention capacity. This formulation will contribute to restoring agricultural land, curbing land desertification and boosting agricultural yields across several locations in the Mediterranean region. On a wider scale, FENIX will advance sustainable bio-waste management, promote climate change mitigation, and secure an independent energy supply.

Presenting Bin2Bean, our partner project! Here’s a little about them: Bin2Bean is a Horizon Group Europe project that aims to promote initiatives that work towards valorising bio-waste and optimise their recycling into soil improvers. The goal is to do so in economically viable value chains. Learn more about them on their website and support them on this ambitious project: https://www.bin2bean.eu/

𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐬 After 14 months of research, we’ve analysed 36 biochar types derived from woody green wastes and composting residues under varying pyrolysis conditions. The goal was to identify the best biochars to be used in combination with digestate and targeted to improve soil properties. 🎯 𝖪𝖾𝗒 𝖲𝖾𝗅𝖾𝖼𝗍𝗂𝗈𝗇 𝖢𝗋𝗂𝗍𝖾𝗋𝗂𝖺: Low Electrical Conductivity and pH: Minimise soil salinisation. High Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC): Boost nutrient retention and reduce nitrogen loss. High Soil Moisture Retention: Improve water availability for plants. Low Heavy Metal Content: Prevent soil contamination. Carbon Sequestration: Mitigate climate change. Nutrient Contribution: Enhance soil fertility and support plant health. 🧪 𝖱𝖾𝗌𝗎𝗅𝗍𝗌: Our consortium partners have selected 4 biochars: ♦ Two optimised for general soil improvement, offering better nutrient retention, low salinity, and heavy metal contribution. ♦ Two biochars suited for specialised applications: These biochars show better performance in carbon sequestration and potential for use in acidic soils, but this application requires further experimental verification. This selection ensures versatility for different soil conditions and agricultural needs. ⏭️ 𝖭𝖾𝗑𝗍 𝗌𝗍𝖾𝗉𝗌: CIRAD will produce these selected biochars for the project's next phase: testing and selecting the 4 best biochar-digestate mixture doses targeted for different soil types.
