UK inflation has finally hit the Bank of England’s target rate of 2% 📉. However, given the economic challenges over the past few years, it will be a while before consumers stop feeling the pinch. For many CPG brands, a topic that goes hand in hand with inflation is Private Label and the increased threat they feel from consumers trading down. But has the Private Label bubble in the UK burst? We often see Private Label having an unfair share of search online compared to what you’d expect in store, but looking at YoY trends for May, there is evidence that this might be lessening, with some UK grocers taking up slightly less page 1 space compared to last year. The retailer that bucks that trend is Waitrose, which has seen Private Label share of page 1 increase by 4% on average for the keywords we studied. It says something about the continued pressures consumers are facing if even the relatively affluent Waitrose shoppers are looking for ‘essentials’ ranges when doing their weekly shop 😓 Another thing that's clear from looking at the data is that the size of the Private Label threat is nuanced not just by retailer, but by category too. For example, Morrison’s share of the “Toilet Paper” keyword is down 23ppts, but Tesco’s share is up 7ppts. Various other examples of this are highlighted in the graphic below.
