A national coalition strengthening communities by reinvigorating local news
About us
Press Forward is a historic initiative to strengthen democracy in the United States by revitalizing local news and information. The steady and significant decline in the availability of reliable, fact-based local news across the country is connected to growing threats to democracy, increasing polarization, and the spread of disinformation. At the same time, over a decade of investment in journalism experimentation and transformation have produced new models and solutions that are ready to scale, and a new generation of leaders prepared to reinvent and revitalize the field. It’s time to move from individual grantmaking strategies to a shared vision and coordinated action. Press Forward is a national coalition investing more than $500 million to strengthen local newsrooms, close longstanding gaps in journalism coverage, advance public policy that expands access to local news, and to scale the infrastructure the sector needs to thrive. "In order to maintain the role of accurate information in a democratic society, we must create new, decentralized news structures that respond to the perspectives of younger Americans and meet increasingly fragmented audiences wherever they are. Given the tremendous shifts in technology, national diversity, and the organizational economics of journalism, it’s the only way forward." A must read from Imara Jones https://lnkd.in/ed3Xq6hR

These local newsrooms believe "journalism must be rooted in being concretely useful to the communities it serves, and act like a part of the community — which, in some cases, means taking actions beyond the traditional boundaries of reporting." At our recent funder’s summit, we loved hearing from newsrooms funded by Press Forward Chicago - including the South Side Weekly and the Invisible Institute. Both are housed in the same co-working space and collaborate on stories, but their histories and approaches to informing Chicago residents differ. The South Side Weekly began as a student newspaper at the University of Chicago, and holds true to those roots. It still sees itself as a training ground for emerging journalists as it publishes a free print edition focused on “active, participatory, community based journalism,” Executive Director Malik Jackson said. The Invisible Institute, meanwhile, began as a network of people fighting for the rights of public housing residents in the 1990s. Today, the Institute combines data-based investigations with residents lived experiences to create impactful investigations on hate crimes, human trafficking, police violence and more. Their work led to two Pulitzer Prizes last year. Thank you to all the Chicago journalists who shared their insights with Press Forward funders, including Windy City Media Network, LLC, Cicero Independiente, Growing Community Media NFP (parent company of Austin Weekly News) and Chicago News Weekly. And to our Chicago funders for helping us organize the events: The Chicago Community Trust, MacArthur Foundation and The Joyce Foundation. Congrats to the journalists, funders and the American Journalism Project working to bring more local news to Los Angeles!
Today, we are announcing the L.A. Local News Initiative, a new effort that will operate and support local newsrooms in Los Angeles to provide coverage at neighborhood, regional, and state levels — all in service of L.A. communities. This launch represents a growing movement of people across the country who recognize the important role of strong local news in our communities. We’re joined in this effort by a large coalition of nearly 2 dozen philanthropists, and almost as many media organizations — the initiative is launching with $15 million, and plans to keep raising money for this effort. We’re eager to see this work come to life in the months to come.
