"Relationships are our lifeline and while it's tempting to point the finger at the pandemic or economic upheaval, there's one underlying factor that's been eroding the quality of our relationships for years... As we communicate more through technology, the caliber of our conversations is suffering, our country is suffering. We are not listening to one another." - Danielle Robay Thank you for having me on PRETTYSMART, Danielle! 💡 ✨

America has transformed from a nation of joiners to a nation of loners. And according to the legendary social scientist, Robert Putnam, America is divided, isolated and… suffering with trust issues. Putnam states, “It’s only by connecting with other people that we generalize from our experience. In a running club [for example], you learn that you can trust other people, and learn in a way what you need to do to maintain that trust.” At Peoplehood, our mission is to restore trust (and trustworthiness) in humanity one conversation at a time. And by providing spaces for people to *really* listen to one another, we can (hopefully) begin to humanize the world around us and become more united again.

"Learning how to be in a partnership is a tangible skill,” Rice explains. “These are the types of skills we teach at Peoplehood. Entrepreneurs spend so much time learning about business models and yet we assume something like partnership will just take care of itself.”

One of my greatest accomplishments is my relationship with Elizabeth Cutler. As co-founders and business partners, we understand intimately how much intentional time, practice and commitment it takes to work through conflict, and most importantly how to listen deeply and actually hear each other. Learning how to be in a partnership is a tangible skill. These are the types of skills we teach at Peoplehood.

‘Wow, how do you do that?’ The idea is simple: ask your younger colleagues about the strategies they use to do their jobs. Reverse mentorship has been shown to be an effective way to build relationships and encourage communication in the workplace. It also helps young professionals feel valued, heard and recognized at work. When leaders ask more questions of the people around them, it shows strength and resilience, not inferiority. How do you use reverse mentorship?

“Any corporate leader will tell you that fostering friendships at work ranks among their toughest challenges,” opined a recent cover story published by Korn Ferry. When people are close with their co-workers, “they can get more done in less time, they’re more likely to share innovative ideas,” says Jim Harter, Gallup’s chief workplace scientist. How are you thinking about fostering friendship at work?

We believe that the secret to great cross-functional communication is knowing each other better. It’s about understanding our peers as humans, as communicators, as experts in their function and making them feel seen, heard and appreciated. 1️⃣ 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 In 1:1s or team meetings, start with a question like:  • 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩? • 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘶𝘱 𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵?  • 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘵𝘰? 2️⃣ 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞  Oftentimes we think sweeping tension or misunderstandings under the rug will make our relationships better. The opposite is true — we usually trip over what was swept under the rug. In your 1:1s try asking:  • 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘠𝘖𝘜 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺? • 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘞𝘌 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺? 𝘐𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘰 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱? 3️⃣ 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧  Conversations are about connecting. Be on the lookout for your chances to learn about and understand your people in a new way. People will tell you exactly who they are, if you listen. Take a breath, don’t fill the silence and let them speak. We’d love to work with you to imbed these relational practices within your organization. 👇If breaking down silos is top of mind for you, comment “Silo Buster” below to learn more👇

We believe that the secret to great workplace culture is strong relationships. It’s one where employees feel seen and heard, where leaders are transparent and empathetic and where teams are proud and excited to collaborate. *A few ways to build better workplace culture* 1️⃣ Start Meetings with Real Talk: Sometimes small talk IS >>> Kick off meetings with questions like:  • 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶? • 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬? 2️⃣ Schedule Check Ins: The fastest way to build a more connected culture  During a quick 10-minute virtual check-in with a different colleague each week, try asking: • 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺? • 𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸? • 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘶𝘱 𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘵𝘰? 3️⃣ Celebrate Wins: We all want to feel seen & appreciated Take 10 minutes in a team meeting once a month to ask one of these questions:  • 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮?  • 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘵? • 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘪𝘨 𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺? We’d love to work with you to imbed these relational practices within your organization. 👇Comment “Watercooler” below to learn more about our Peoplehood @Work Programs 👇
