Welcome to Tony’s Trade Talk, I will be discussing different tools/equipment and PPE that are commonly used in the Construction Trades that could be of benefit. Today we are to discuss Fatigue on the Job. You are the most important safeguard in protecting yourself and others while at work. When you are not able to fully focus and perform your duties correctly, you could be leaving yourself at risk of injury. Being tired on the job is a major problem in the United States for workers. Fatigue leaves workers performing at lower levels, and this exposes them to higher chances of an injury or an incident occurring. It is important to prevent fatigue while on the job to keep yourself and those around you safe. Statistics: • Fatigue carries an overall estimated cost of more than $136 billion per year to employers in health-related lost productivity. • 1 in every 5 workers is sleep deprived. • Poor sleeping habits lead to stress on the job. • In a conducted survey of 29,000 adults, 38% reported feeling tired at work in the last two weeks. Fatigue Causes: • Lack of sleep. • Too many demands at work, school, or home. • Medication. • Other health problems, such as depression or anxiety. Safe Practices to Prevent or Improve Fatigue Issues: • Get plenty of rest. It is recommended to get a minimum of seven hours of sleep a night. If your work schedule is too demanding or the hours you are working are making you feel fatigued every single day, talk with a supervisor. Sometimes responsibilities or schedules can be altered to improve productivity and safety in the workplace. • It is important to understand the side effects of the medication before using it at work. Talk with your doctor to make sure he/she understands your work responsibilities to ensure the medication will not interfere with your performance. • Take care of your health. Addressing other health issues can greatly improve how you feel both at home and at work. • Eat a better diet. Food to humans is as gasoline is to a car – if you put dirty gas in your car, it will not run well. The same goes for your body!

Welcome to Tony’s Trade Talk, I will be discussing different tools/equipment and PPE that are commonly used in the Construction Trades that could be of benefit. Today we are to discuss Radon Gas. Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless radioactive gas that is formed naturally in the ground by the breakdown of uranium in soil, rocks and water. Radon gas breaks down further to form radioactive particles “progeny” that can be breathed into the lungs. As a gas, radon is slowly released from the ground, water, and some building materials that contain very small amounts of uranium, such as concrete, bricks, tiles, gannet and gyproc. Radon gas and radon progeny in the air can be breathed into the lungs where they breakdown further and damage lung cells. When lung cells are damaged, they have the potential to result in cancer when they reproduce. When radon is released from the ground outside it mixes with fresh air and gets diluted resulting in concentrations too low to be of concern. Buildings can act like a vacuum for underground gases. When air is pushed out of the structure, air containing radon is sucked in through cracks in foundation walls, floors, joints, gaps and service pipes, support posts, floor drains, sump pumps, and water supply. Radon concentrations fluctuate seasonally, but are usually higher in winter than in summer, and are usually higher at night than during the day. On average, 16% of lung cancer deaths are attributable to radon exposure. If you are a lifelong smoker but are not exposed to radon, your risk of getting lung cancer is one in ten. If you add radon exposure, you risk becomes one in three. For a non-smoker, your lifetime lung cancer risk at the same high radon level is one in twenty. Testing There are two options for testing for radon: one is to purchase a do-it-yourself radon test kit and the other is to hire a radon measurement professional. If testing shows levels of radon above the threshold, remedial measures should be taken. Occurring Radioactive Material Guidelines There is no legal requirement for employers or landlords to test.
