About us

Our mission is to protect the public’s right to clean water in the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and their tributaries. We stop pollution to enhance the safety of our drinking water, protect healthy river habitats, and enhance public use and enjoyment. We work to protect water quality in the Potomac River, which is the source of drinking water for almost six million people. Over the last decade, our call for clean drinking water has reached millions of community members living in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Our staff of Riverkeepers and advocates visit communities, giving people a snapshot of their local water quality and letting them know how they can make it better. We also stand up to the large-scale polluters that send tons of toxic pollution into our water supply each year. Potomac Riverkeeper Network uses the Clean Water Act and other environmental laws to stop polluters from destroying our drinking water source and to clean up existing pollution. Dollar for dollar, pound for pound, no organization has been more effective in cleaning up our water supply.

Updates

  • Here are the results for WQM testing on July 17th!! Please note that water quality status for all Upper Potomac sites are historical and may not be indicative of current conditions. As always, this data may change after a heavy rainfall as stormwater runoff contributes heavily to bacteria concentrations by washing trash and pollutants into storm sewers which may overflow and dump into our river. Typically, if a site gets more than an inch of rain, it’s recommended to wait at least 48 hours before coming into contact with the river. 🌧️ Make sure to download the Swim Guide app to see the most current water quality data!
