About us

Our mission is to protect the public’s right to clean water in the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and their tributaries. We stop pollution to enhance the safety of our drinking water, protect healthy river habitats, and enhance public use and enjoyment. We work to protect water quality in the Potomac River, which is the source of drinking water for almost six million people. Over the last decade, our call for clean drinking water has reached millions of community members living in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Our staff of Riverkeepers and advocates visit communities, giving people a snapshot of their local water quality and letting them know how they can make it better. We also stand up to the large-scale polluters that send tons of toxic pollution into our water supply each year. Potomac Riverkeeper Network uses the Clean Water Act and other environmental laws to stop polluters from destroying our drinking water source and to clean up existing pollution. Dollar for dollar, pound for pound, no organization has been more effective in cleaning up our water supply.

  • Attention all water protectors! The Chesapeake Bay Program is accepting public comments up until August 30th on its recommendations on Chesapeake Bay restoration strategies and goals beyond 2025. The Bay Program needs to hear stories and concerns from community members who care about the health and protection of our waters. After four decades of tireless effort, our waterways and communities are still far from the Bay Agreement restoration goals. Today, 71.9% of Chesapeake's tidal waters remain impaired — an improvement of only 1.6% since 1985. Take action today! The Bay Program, and state and federal leaders must ensure a Beyond 2025 strategy that is accountable, addresses the impacts of climate change, and has real solutions for communities facing often catastrophic environmental threats. Feedback will be accepted via email to [email protected] through 11:59 p.m. ET on Friday, August 30, 2024. Or, submit comments here: https://ow.ly/e9wx50T4AgL

  • With the gorgeous weather we have been having, it is not surprise that the majority of our sampling sites passed testing this week! Make sure to get out and enjoy the river and the sunshine before summer ends! ☀️ Remember, WQM results are based on testing done for E. Coli bacteria. When high levels of E. Coli are present, it is advised to stay out of the water due to its ability to make people sick. This data may change after a heavy rainfall as stormwater runoff contributes heavily to bacteria concentrations by washing trash and pollutants into storm sewers which may overflow and dump into our river. Typically, if a site has more than 1 inch of rain, you should wait 48 hours before coming into contact with the river. #waterqualitymonitoring #waterquality #potomacriver #potomacriverkeeper #swimguide
