About us
Our Mission: POST protects open space on the Peninsula and in the South Bay for the benefit of all. These lands are preserved forever so present and future generations benefit from the careful balance of rural and urban landscapes that makes our region extraordinary. Our Impact: Since our founding in 1977, POST has protected more than 87,000 acres of permanent open space, farms and parkland in San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties. 🌿 Exciting news! We transferred 644 acres of the stunning Johnston Ranch property in Half Moon Bay to Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen). This move expands the Miramontes Ridge Open Space Preserve, enhancing our region's protected landscapes. 🌾 The iconic Johnston Ranch spans 868 acres of coastal beauty, including rolling hills, diverse ecosystems, and working farmlands. Since the 1990s, we've worked to preserve this land, and now, with Midpen's stewardship, it will continue to thrive. 🌼 With this momentous transfer, we are now one step closer to realizing some long-awaited public access projects. Midpen is currently working with the City of Half Moon Bay on plans to expand parking and trailhead access on the Johnston House property. They are also exploring possibilities for a pedestrian and bike trail connecting downtown to the Johnston House via nearby Higgins Canyon Road and the California Coastal Trail to the west. Stay tuned for more details as they unfold! 🚲 Johnston Ranch is located within the ancestral territory of a number of Indigenous peoples, including the Ramaytush Ohlone and the Quiroste Tribe, two of the many independent tribal groups referred to collectively today as the Ohlone. 🔔 Exciting news! 🔔 Just over one year ago, POST purchased and protected Lakeside Ranch, one of the largest remaining intact ranches in the South Bay. Today, we announced the official transfer of 1,908 acres of Lakeside Ranch to our partners at the Santa Clara Valley Habitat Agency. As a connected whole, this rare landscape provides critical habitat and wildlife passages that help maintain our region's biodiversity; as such, it's important to safeguard it from harmful development. We are thrilled that the Habitat Agency will protect and steward this extraordinary place from here on out. The Habitat Agency purchased the property with generous funding from the Wildlife Conservation Board and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
