PRC crew joined folks from CONNECT (Congress of Neighboring Communities), Posner Foundation and others to tour City of Hermitage wastewater treatment plant. This incredible facility uses anaerobic digestion to process food waste alongside biosolids collected from #wastewater into #biogas used to produce energy that goes back into the grid. Thursday's field trip explored different avenues of food waste diversion -- including landfill and #composting -- and highlighted a unique approach to the food waste problem.

Exciting announcement: we are expanding!🥳 With the support of the Posner Foundation, we are grateful to announce that we are expanding our organization to offer formalized support for our currently enrolled high school students and alumni, ages 18-24, with a Post-Secondary Success Program. The addition of this program comes from feedback received from students, staff, board members, and partners and working groups that included staff and Youth Steering Committee Members during our strategic planning process where 2 priorities became clear: 1 ) build a post-secondary success program that both supports existing high school programs and formalizes ways in which ARYSE works with youth aged 18-24 and 2) Explore opportunities to deepen and expand university and college collaborations that include stronger connections/pipeline development to CCAC as well as other colleges and universities. Our support of students during their post-secondary education is not new but will instead be formalized into holistic programming led by the Post-Secondary Program Manager - more details on how to apply will be shared tomorrow! Again, thank you to the Posner Foundation for supporting us with this expansion. We look forward to sharing more about post-secondary education and continuing to collaborate with our partners. #ARYSEandshine

In a research project funded by the Posner Foundation, we found that most food waste in Sub-Saharan Africa occurs not at dinner tables, but at the point of purchase - the traditional markets. After spending days in markets in Kenya and Nigeria, we discovered that consumers do not like buying less visually appealing produce (LVAP). This behavior discourages vendors from displaying LVAP, leading to significant food waste. To address this issue, we designed an intervention to educate vendors and consumers about LVAP. Our solutions included: 1) A user-friendly point-of-purchase guide to enhance communication between vendors and consumers regarding LVAP. 2) Innovative display formats to optimize marketplace methods. Our first FaRM tale features Chiku the Curvy Carrot and Prince the Portly Potato at a busy market in Africa. These less visually appealing vegetables experience the transformative power of behavioral mechanisms, turning the market from a place of mere transactions into a space where imperfections are seen as badges of authenticity. As consumers find beauty in the imperfection of less visually appealing produce, we experience the transformative power of behavioral science. Thanks to the generosity of Mima Nedelcovych and his wife, Sally. We've created a scholarship program at Open Field to support student athletes who participate on the CCAC Club Soccer Team. After two years of successfully growing the men's program, with support from Hansen Foundation and Posner Foundation, we're launching a women's team this fall! There couldn't be a better time to provide a new level of support (financial) to first-generation student athletes who participate in the program. If you know someone on the team (or a soccer player attending CCAC in the fall), encourage them to apply. If you're interested in learning more, reach out to me. And if you'd like to participate in the Scholarship Review Committee, consider joining Madison Clark, MPA, Kendall Fairley, Hamadi Mganga, Alissa Monette, and Andrew Jeffrey on the Young Leaders Board: https://lnkd.in/exQ-2Rak
