🚨 Breaking News: President Biden has signed the National Plan to End Parkinson’s Act into law! This is the first-ever federal legislation dedicated to ending Parkinson’s disease. This monumental bill can make an impact by: 💵 Dramatically increasing federal research funding 🔬 Developing more effective pathways for treatments and cures 🩺 Improving early diagnosis 🥼 Sparking new and improved models for patient care ⚖️ Addressing health disparities in diagnosis, treatment, and clinical trial participation We would like to thank all the Parkinson’s advocates, volunteers and people who wrote to their senators and representatives to make this bill become law. “The Parkinson’s Foundation is excited for what comes next,” said John Lehr, Parkinson’s Foundation President and CEO. “We look forward to having input in designing exactly how this bill will mobilize meaningful change for the one million Americans living with this disease.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gNU9tYc8

As #CancerSurvivorsMonth comes to a close, we'd like to honor the incredible strength and resilience of survivors and patients of all ages like Haley Kletke, MS, CGC, a Genetic Counselor with our parent laboratory (Fulgent Genetics). In 2024, nearly 2 million people will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States. Detecting cancer early can lead to less extensive treatment, more treatment options, and improved chances of survival. The impact of cancer continues even after treatment ends -- survivors often experience ongoing challenges such as emotional distress, financial hardship, and physical hurdles that can last a lifetime.   National Cancer Survivors Month serves as a source of hope and a reminder to raise awareness about the needs of survivors. It advocates for more resources, research, and survivor-friendly support to enhance their quality of life during and after cancer treatment. #NCSD #NationalCancerSurvivorMonth #NationalCancerSurvivorsDay #CancerSurvivorDay #CancerAwareness #CancerSurvivor #CancerSurvivors

This June, let's talk about Men's Health.   It's time to ditch the stigma and open up about what truly matters: physical and mental well-being. Men's Health Month is about creating a space for open conversations and taking charge of your health, mind, and body. 💪 Here's a reality check: - On average, men in the US die nearly 6 years earlier than women and are at higher risk for diseases including heart disease, lung cancer, and prostate cancer.  - The suicide rate in the US is 3.85 times higher for men. - The percentage of men aged 18 and above with hypertension (measured by high blood pressure and/or taking antihypertensive medication) is 50.5%.    This month (and all year long!), we're here to encourage men and boys to break down barriers, initiate conversations, and make healthy choices for life.

#CysticFibrosis (#CF) is a #geneticcondition caused by variants in the CFTR gene. In April 2023, the FDA approved CFTR modulators to target these mutations and improve CF patients' lung function and overall health.   Advancements in genetics research, such as CFTR modulators and genetic testing, have significantly increased life expectancy for those with CF. 1. The life expectancy of children born with CF in 2022 is 56 years or older, a 47% increase compared to 38 years old a decade earlier (2012).  2. The number of lung transplants for CF patients in 2022 dramatically decreased from 2019, which corresponds to improvements in lung health. 3. In 1955, most children with CF did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, more than half the CF population is 18 years or older. Let's celebrate these advancements and keep pushing for a cure!

#ThrowbackThursday to the podcast episode on #Pharmacogenomics (#PGx) with Kira Dineen, MS, LCGC, CG(ASCP)CM from DNA Today and our very own Gregory Kellogg. Pharmacogenomics tests analyze a person's genetic variations to help predict their drug response and how their body will metabolize different medications. Picture PGx can help you make well-informed decisions about medications through pharmacogenomic testing. At Picture Genetics, we are proud to offer an affordable, at-home test that uses a silva sample to determine how your genes impact your body’s reaction to over 100 medications. Our testing analyzes genes associated with medication in many areas, including cardiovascular health, psychiatry, oncology, and more. #Pharmacogenetics

Did you know that #GeneticTesting can help determine medication efficacy based on variations in your genes?   In fact, there have been recent studies examining the potential of preemptive #pharmacogenetic (#PGx) testing to improve treatment outcomes and reduce the risk of adverse drug reactions (#ADRs).   1. ADRs account for 3-6% of hospital admissions in the United States. 2. Four out of five patients will likely carry a genetic variant that could alter the efficacy of commonly prescribed drugs. 3. According to studies, 93.5% of patient results showed at least one actionable gene variant. Of those tested, 33% experienced a decrease in ADRs. While further research is needed and not all medications are influenced by genetics, current evidence suggests it can be a valuable tool for personalized medicine. As we enter #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, Picture Genetics is proud to offer Picture PGx powered by Fulgent Genetics, a clinical laboratory with CAP and CLIA certifications. Through Picture PGx, we analyze genes with medication associations in fields including Psychiatry, Cardiovascular Health, Oncology, and more. ISSN 1473-1150 (online) | https://lnkd.in/gGeAuJMp
