Advanced LiDAR Mapping Solutions

About us

Phoenix LiDAR Systems was the first to introduce commercial drone LiDAR to the market, in what is now a global industry. When organizations seek to digitize the physical world, whether for surveying, archeology, film, or more, Phoenix LiDAR builds them a fully integrated UAV LiDAR system, combining our hardware and software with an assortment of sensors to create a customized system that is ready to fly. Phoenix LiDAR Systems builds custom, survey-grade laser mapping systems, and automation software for flight planning, acquisition, and post-processing, enabling clients to collect detailed, 3D topographic information for a wide range of commercial and research applications, including engineering, construction, mining, and more.

Tech Tip! Static vs. Kinematic Alignment IMU (inertial measurement unit) alignment is a crucial step in mission planning and flight execution. Proper kinematic alignment is critical to obtaining an optimal trajectory. There are two types of IMU alignment: static and kinematic (or dynamic). Static alignment is performed on the ground after startup and allows the IMU to estimate roll and pitch using sensed gravity. It uses the Earth's rotation to estimate yaw. Only IMUs with a gyro bias of less than 15 degrees per hour, such as Phoenix's IMU 33, 52, and 60, can statically align. This is because the Earth rotates at approximately 15 degrees per hour. It is recommended for static alignment to be performed for a minimum of five minutes before and after the mission. Kinematic, or dynamic, alignment is performed for IMUs with a gyro bias higher than 15 degrees per hour. Kinematic alignment is performed in flight prior to the figure 8 maneuvers at the beginning of the mission and after the figure 8 maneuvers at the end of the mission. When the IMU is turned on, it can detect the pitch and roll but the IMU does not automatically know what direction is its heading/yaw. To determine an accurate heading/yaw, Phoenix LiDAR Systems recommends travelling forward for a period of at least 10 seconds, at a minimum velocity of 5 m/s, moving as straight and as level as possible with a clear line of sight. This allows the navigation system to determine initial yaw through course-over-ground. Tech Tip: The Importance of Checklists in LiDAR Operations Our support team handles support requests from LiDAR technicians and UAV operators facing avoidable issues. Many of these problems stem from overlooked details that could have been easily prevented using a comprehensive checklist. Checklist Benefits: ✅ Comprehensive Preparation: Ensures completion of all pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight tasks. ✅ Error Reduction: Minimizes the risk of forgetting critical steps. ✅ Safety Enhancement: Prevents accidents and ensures safe operations. ✅ Standardized Procedures: Promotes consistency among team members. ✅ Improved Data Quality: Addresses all aspects of data collection. Commonly Missed Checklist Items: 1. Not verifying all systems are functional before flight. 2. Not verifying cable connections are secure. 3. Not removing the lens cap or sensor shroud before the flight. 4. No backup SD cards, USB drives, cables, props, tools 5. Not following system shutdown procedures. 6. Not performing pre-flight or post-flight inspections on the UAS and LiDAR sensor for possible damage. Integrating the above items into a checklist can enhance safety, improve data quality, boost efficiency, and standardize procedures in your UAV operations, ensuring successful and reliable LiDAR data acquisition. #LoveLiDAR #LiDARacquisition #LiDARsupport
