NEW: Kevin Singer writes about PACE research for TheFulcrum.US: "It might surprise some that a relatively low percentage (17 percent) of participants selected democracy as their most positive term, while over a quarter (27 percent) chose democracy as their most negative term. This suggests that while 'democracy' is generally viewed favorably, it may not be the most compelling or motivating concept for many Americans." Read more: https://lnkd.in/gywpx6f7

NEW: CEO Kristen Cambell is featured on BYU Broadcasting's Top of Mind with Julie Rose, where she shares an inspiring account of serving on a jury. Episode description: A trial by jury is an important American right, enshrined in the 6th and 7th amendments of the constitution. But do jury trials work the way we want them to? Should America continue to lean away from juries, or press to make them more present in our system - and perhaps more just? Listen to the episode here: https://lnkd.in/gjiVxnid

How do you feel when you hear words like “community,” “racial equality,” and “freedom”? According to a survey by Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE) that tracked reactions to 21 emotive words about America and democracy over the past 5 years, words like these can elicit strong but sometimes diametrically opposed reactions. Join Planet Word and PACE on September 16 for a provocative online presentation about how the words we choose shape our messages and reach — or turn off — our intended audiences in our increasingly divided world. We are thrilled to share this terrific example of a trailblazing nonprofit making democracy larger than politics in 2024: Trust for Public Land developed a framework to build community power through the creation and stewardship of green spaces, demonstrating the power of parks to enrich democracy. We join them in recognizing the importance of transcending partisanship to ensure a more inclusive and participatory democratic society! For someone who regularly jokes that I don't like people, I adore data that tells me about them. I have a client who I learned is equally geeky about such things and, since we're working together in the civic engagement space, she shared with me this fantastic study from Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE). PACE's "Civic Language Perceptions Project 2024" is fascinating for a number of reasons, but I love how, in this age of AI, the study combs things such as what words we can use to bring people together, and those we can avoid that might encourage division. Take a look. The dashboard is free to access and there are a number of Webinars that synthesize the work. I'm not suggesting that word choice is everything, but an engaged citizenry is critical to our communities, and communicators have an important role to play! https://lnkd.in/gcjx94uf

Is your foundation or organization hoping to inspire more engagement from conservatives? Scott Warren of SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University and Matthew Germer of R Street Institute need to be on your radar. In this interview with Kristen Cambell, they discuss their collaborative project aimed at building a pro-democracy agenda specifically for conservatives. They highlight the importance of engaging right-leaning voices in democracy reform efforts, addressing a gap often dominated by left-leaning perspectives.
