NEW: Joy Ossei-Anto- discusses the purpose of our "Democracy is Larger than Politics Salons," desribes her observations of funder-participants so far, and proposes next steps for philanthropy to rise to the challenge of making democracy larger than politics in 2024. "We're seeing a trend in these conversations that there is an accepted, unstated belief that #politics is bad. But politics isn't necessarily bad; it may be the means by which something really supportive for a community gets pushed forward. Our hope is to increase the message that #democracy is more than just politics, not necessarily that politics is bad and we shouldn't engage in it."

Earlier this month we held Seed Coalition's Presidents' Leadership Retreat at Grinnell College. Thank you to Anne Harris and her team for being warm and conscientious hosts for both days! It was a pleasure to be joined by Amy McIsaac to present on Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE)'s Civic Language Perception Project. And thank you to Alicia Faust, Becky Vonnahme, and Andrea V Duarte-Alonso for bringing the viewpoint from communities we serve to the table. Lastly, I'm so very grateful to Scott Olson, Dr. Rachelle Karstens Keck, Kumara Jayasuriya, Mark Nook, Rob Denson, Adreain Maurice Henry, OD, EdD, MBA, MA, Virginia Arthur, and Paula O'loughlin for taking the time to join us for all or part of the event. We look forward to having next year's retreat at Grand View University! More to come!
