  • “What excites me about the creative scene in Philly is that it’s ever-evolving” – Shannon Maldonado. In honor of our exhibition, Mary Cassatt at Work, we’ve profiled five Philly-based creatives who are trailblazers in their respective fields. Fortunately for us, Shannon invited us into her design world. As the founder and creative director of Yowie and Yowie Hotel, Shannon is creating new immersive experiences for Philly locals and visitors alike. We deeply appreciate Shannon finding the time to share a little bit of her story. Come see Mary Cassatt at Work, on view now through Sept 8, and watch the full video on our YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/4eUH5kS #CassattatWork #Philadelphia #ArtMuseum

  • Save the date for The Roz M. Perry Memorial Lecture: Artists at Work - Saturday, July 20, 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Inspired by the exhibition Mary Cassatt at Work, this panel will be a gathering of three local, women-identifying artists: Aimee Koran, Chelsey Luster, and Martha Rich. Cassatt was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, and she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia. She was an artist who deftly navigated the creative and public aspects of her life despite the challenges she faced in nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century society. The artists on this panel will discuss their training in various mediums, their artistic practices, and their professional experiences. They will be in conversation with Jennifer Thompson, The Gloria and Jack Drosdick Curator of European Painting and Sculpture and Curator of the John G. Johnson Collection and Laurel Garber, The Park Family Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings, who will provide historical background and insight about Cassatt’s own life and work. Free with museum admission, registration required. Register here: https://bit.ly/4bID0gX 🖼️ "Lydia at a Tapestry Frame (detail)", around 1881, Mary Cassatt

  • This pastel work is more than meets the eye. "At the Theater (Au théâtre)" has hidden layers that reveal Mary Cassatt's creative process in action. In our team's latest exploration, we examined one of Cassatt's pastel works using x-ray and infrared imagery. This analysis unveiled her use of distemper, a glue-mixed paint, as the foundation. Cassatt initially employed distemper to structure the fan in the artwork, though she later scraped parts off, leaving shadows visible today. Cassatt's journey with pastels began modestly but blossomed in the late 1870s during her time in Paris with the Impressionist group. This piece not only showcases her mastery of the medium but also her innovation in pushing its boundaries. 📍 Come see over 130 prints, paintings and pastels in Mary Cassatt at Work, on view through Sept 8, 2024.
