“I was manifesting it! I told my kids – I’m going to be the first Puerto Rican, first Latino Deputy Chief. I bought the insignia and carried it in my pocket, and I would place it on the table to look at while I was studying and taking the test. I prayed on it, put the work in, and made it happen. At times, being bilingual feels like a hidden superpower on this job. I’m able to help and communicate with a grandmother who only speaks Spanish to better express herself, as well as speak with and interact with citizens throughout our locals and I can show kids in our neighborhoods that they too can make it to be a Firefighter and a public servant.” https://lnkd.in/eAXivx-4 #PFDStrongerTogether #HispanicHeritageMonth2024 #Hispanicheritage #Latino

About us
(Dial 911 for emergencies) The Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services (EMS) to the City of Philadelphia. We are the largest fire department in Pennsylvania, with one of the busiest EMS divisions in the country. Members of the Fire Department fight fires, provide emergency medical treatment, and rescue people from dangerous situations. Our engines, ladders, and ambulances are housed at 63 stations across the City. We have specialized divisions that investigate fires, deal with hazardous materials, and help protect Philadelphia International Airport. We also teach the public about fire safety and work to prevent fires through smoke alarm installation.

It was a busy holiday weekend for our PFD members, who responded to more than 2,775 medical and fire incidents. Friday before the long weekend, our Fire Prevention and Code Division team joined with the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania to visit neighborhoods where there were recent fire fatalities. They installed free smoke alarms for neighbors. These photos are from Kensington. If you need smoke alarms for your home, call 311 to put in the request - we'll come install them for free. #PFDStrongerTogether

Congratulations to our newly-promoted PFD members! Tuesday, Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson administered their oath in a room full of family, friends, colleagues, and supporters. We are proud of ALL these promotees, which we're honored to say includes our first Latino Deputy Fire Chief, and our first Black woman Deputy Fire Chief. The promotions include Deputy Chiefs, Battalion Chiefs, Captains, and Lieutenants. Each step in their PFD journey is laying a stronger foundation for future members, and serves as an inspiration to us all. To each person promoted: Thank you for your sacrifice and dedication to this great city. Way to go! 🎉

Foxtrot 7 has made a smooth landing at Engine 78 - that's our Airport Rescue Fire Fighting unit located at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). F7 is a type of vehicle called a crash truck, and it looks different from most fire trucks because it's built specifically to respond to aircraft emergencies. Our members began their training on it last week. #24x7x365
