About us

Phaidra deploys artificial intelligence virtual plant operators to assist operations teams in mission critical facilities deliver step function improvements in stability, energy efficiency and sustainability. We create self-learning, intelligent control systems for industrial facilities. Our co-founders and leadership team represent the combination of deep artificial intelligence and machine learning expertise from companies like Google-Deepmind, with the applied knowledge of mission critical cooling and heating systems from organizations like Trane and Johnson Controls. The industrial sector today is filled with static infrastructure. Pharmaceutical production, data centers, district energy and other industrial facilities are frozen in time — they operate in the same way they've operated for years because their control systems are hard-coded, and hard-coded systems cannot change dynamically, leading to performance degradation and a lack of resiliency. Our AI-powered control systems automatically learn, adapt, and get better over time. Our team has already delivered 40% energy savings at Google's data centers, and we're rapidly bringing AI technology to other types of industrial facilities.

    CEO & Co-founder at Phaidra

It's been 4.5 years since Katie H., Vedavyas Panneershelvam and I started Phaidra. We raised our first (pre-seed) capital in Feb 2020, just one week before Seattle became the first US city to enter COVID lockdowns. Of the many lessons I've learned, one stands out: work with the best people. Get the right people on the bus (as Jim Collins says in his seminal book Good to Great). This applies equally to investors as it does to teammates. I'm both proud and humbled by the opportunity to work with the amazing team Index Ventures as we execute Phaidra's mission of AI for radical resource efficiency. Index is truly a cut above the rest when it comes to scaling exceptional companies. Martin Mignot and Ishani Thakur — we have a lot of building to do!

Climate change is the world’s biggest existential threat, and the growing impact of AI is undeniable. In 2022, data centers, crypto and AI accounted for an estimated 2% of global power demand (source: International Energy Agency). That percentage is expected to 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲. While AI contributes to the problem, it also holds keys to the solution. Enter our $12m investment in Phaidra, which uses AI and reinforcement learning to help data centers operate more efficiently. It optimizes cooling systems and reduces energy costs, which account for up to half of operating expenses and most of the carbon emissions (which vary depending on how the electricity is produced). We couldn’t have dreamt of a better founder/product/market fit. Jim Gao and Vedavyas Panneershelvam were behind one of DeepMind’s biggest achievements: a 40% reduction in the energy needed to cool Google’s data centers using AI-powered solutions. Katie H., an industrial control systems engineer, got word of their findings when she was at Trane as an engineering team lead. Later, she joined as Phaidra’s third co-founder and COO. The team brings a rare combination of experience that are critical in this space: ⭐ Deeply understand the customer and the real-world challenges of industrial automation ⭐ World-class AI research credentials ⭐ Deep data center and facility management expertise The challenge we’ve faced with trying to invest in climate is that most solutions are capex-intensive and hardware-related, which is tricky for the pure venture model. It is rare to find software-only companies making a meaningful climate impact. So I couldn’t be more excited that we met the Phaidra team and convinced them to partner with us. Welcome to the Index Ventures family, Phaidra. I’m excited to join your board and partner on this critical work.

It’s no secret that AI innovation is driving demand for high-powered compute infrastructure. But there’s another critical issue at play: the immense energy required to power and cool these systems. This may be the most important AI challenge few are talking about. Data centers — the backbone of AI — are extremely energy-intensive, consuming 10-50 times the energy per floor space of a typical office building. In northern Virginia, the world’s largest data center market, only 0.2% of grid capacity is available. In Ireland, data centers are projected to account for 32% of national electricity consumption by 2026. The key to sustainable AI growth lies not just in scaling up hardware but in developing better solutions for how we manage the massive energy consumption that comes with it. Generating enough power to run the machines is one thing, but equally important is finding efficient ways to cool them, as this process consumes an enormous amount of energy. That’s why we’re excited to announce our investment in Phaidra, an innovative company whose AI-based control systems use reinforcement learning to help mission-critical facilities like data centers optimize their cooling systems and reduce energy costs. Phaidra is led by Jim Gao, Vedavyas Panneershelvam, and Katie H.. — an experienced team whose work at DeepMind reduced energy usage in Google’s data centers by 40%. They bring a vital mix of engineering know-how, AI research credentials, and dedication to solving the global problem of energy usage in data centers. Learn more about our investment in Phaidra and how this impressive team is powering the future of sustainable AI innovation and growth.
