It’s hard for students of color to reach their full academic potential when they worry about how they may be treated or perceived by others. To combat stereotype threat in your classroom, promote identity safety. Share this with an amazing educator! #PERTSInsights
About us
PERTS uses research-based techniques to raise students' motivation and achievement. Our programs have improved grades and reduced the racial achievement gap at multiple schools. They are designed to change how students think about school in ways that enhance their motivation and achievement. Background Studies by Stanford Professors Carol Dweck, Geoffrey Cohen, and Greg Walton show that short psychological interventions can raise students' motivation and reduce group-based achievement gaps. Because of limited resources, however, few schools could benefit from these interventions. Mission We started PERTS to make the latest research-based behavioral interventions accessible to all schools. We continue to test our programs to better understand when, how, and for whom they are most effective.

How do you show your students that you care about them? Students don’t always see teachers' long hours in grading and planning. If they did, they might make the connection between their teacher’s hard work and their teacher’s care for them as people. Our research shows that students engage more deeply in their work when they feel like their teacher likes them and cares about them. Three ways you can show students you care about them are: ✅Laugh with them while engaging in practical tasks ✅Be intentional about letting students know you remember your conversations with them ✅Be honest about when you fall short. How do you show your students that you care about them? #PERTSInsights

What’s the difference between these two sentences? You don’t know all the vocabulary words. You don’t know all the vocabulary words, yet. Adding “yet” to your communication with students opens their sense of possibilities and signals to them that you believe in them. #PERTSProTip: Use “yet” in your feedback to remind students that your feedback is formative and not a statement about their learning potential.

Could you close the achievement gap in your school if teachers provided students with feedback that emphasizes learning and growth? In a 2019 study, researchers found that the Black-White gap in semester grades was 50 percent smaller in the classes of instructors who emphasized learning and growth. (Canning, E. A., Muenks, K., Green, D. J., & Murphy, M. C., 2019) To learn more about how we help schools collect data on the student experience, visit perts.net/elevate. #PERTSInsights

While teachers are the subject area experts, students are the experts in their own experiences. #PERTSProTip: Regularly collect feedback from students and use that feedback to make informed changes to your teaching practices and classroom environment. Showing your students that you care daily isn’t easy- especially when facing disciplinary problems. #PERTSProTip: In a disciplinary context, students worry about being treated unfairly and are sensitive to any signs of being treated unfairly. Avoid “power struggles.” Talk to students in private when they get in trouble, and give them time to “cool down” and remove any pressure they may feel to be defiant in front of classmates.
