About us
Personalized Arthroplasty Society (PAS) is focused on the development and promotion of personalized and more physiological techniques for hip and knee replacement. These techniques aim to better reproduce patients’ native anatomy and physiological joint laxity, therefore improving the prosthetic hip/knee kinematics and functional outcomes. The PAS will pave the way for the paradigm shift from systematic to personalised surgery.

Founder of ExplantLab, an organisation exploring the links between genetics & the performance of medical devices
Around 2007, there were a few people (koen de smet, Richie Gill and us) who advised that we really should measure blood metal concentrations in patients with metal-on-metal hips. If they are high, there is a problem - even if the patient is asymptomatic...... trouble is coming. It's pretty strange to think now that - given that it's standard practice across the world to measure blood metal levels in MoM hip patients - we got quite a lot of criticism for advocating for this. I probably have more data now on what metal ion levels mean in patients with knee arthroplasties, than we did with patients with metal on metal hips back in 2007. And just like back then, right now we face a lot of scepticism; probably more so. Here is just another example of a patient who had long term ongoing unexplained pain. Loosening not identified on radiographs. Explant findings clearly indicate long term instability. Elevated titanium in blood. I strongly believe we should be measuring metal levels in patients with painful knees...actually any painful joint replacements/metal implants. Will be talking on this at upcoming Personalized Arthroplasty Society meeting and NHS Implant Analysis Service meeting. Jochen G. Hofstaetter Charles Rivière Stefano Bini Prof. Dr.med. I am deeply sad to announce that Philippe Cartier has left us for a better world. He will be remembered as one of the pioneers of personalized arthroplasty, a great surgeon and innovator, as well as a true gentleman. It was an honour to have his company at the PAS annual conference in Bordeaux last year, where I hope he received the recognition he derserved for all he has accomplished within the scientific community. We loved you Philppe, rest in peace ❤️
